Timothy Tarpeh Weah (born February 22, 2000 in New York City , New York ) is an American football player on the position of a striker who is under contract with the Lille OSC .
He is the son of former Liberian national soccer player and President of Liberia , George Weah .
Club career
Career start in the USA and France
Timothy Weah was born on February 22nd, 2000 as the third child of the successful Liberian soccer player George Weah and his Jamaican wife Clar in New York City, New York State. At the time, the father was under contract with AC Milan and only switched to Chelsea on loan during the winter break . He grew up with his mother and younger siblings, alternating between the Brooklyn borough of New York , Valley Stream , New York, and Pembroke Pines , Florida , and was educated in English and French . His mother brought him closer to football, with the youth training club West Pines United in Pembroke Pines one of his first clubs. After returning to New York, he appeared for the Rosedale Soccer Club , owned by his uncle, in Queens . Between 2010 and 2013 he completed three seasons for the offspring of Blau-Weiss Gottschee . During this time, he was accepted into the US Club Soccer's id2 program in 2012 and was discovered at that time by those responsible for the US Football Association and introduced to its youth national teams.
From Blau-Weiss Gottschee , who are a member of the US Soccer Development Academy system, Weah then moved to the academy of the major league soccer franchise New York Red Bulls in 2013 . In the same year he had a trial session in the youth division of Chelsea. Already in August of the following year he moved to the academy of the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain . There the 14-year-old met his older brother George Weah junior , who at that time was already part of the B team with play in the fourth-class CFA . Initially a member of the U-17 team, after just under two years he joined the U-19 team at the academy. With this he played in the 2016/17 Youth League and was used by coach François Rodrigues in three of the six group games and in the defeat on penalties against the FC Salzburg U-19 team in the round of 16. In his second outing, an 8: 1 away win over the offspring of Ludogorez Razgrad , in which the full 90 minutes played for the first time, Weah contributed three goals.
Promotion to the PSG professional squad
In the following season 2017/18 Weah was still part of the U-19 squad of the Parisians , who moved into the 2017/18 Youth League to the round of 16 and lost 1-0 against the offspring of FC Barcelona . Early in autumn Weah rose to the B-team with play in the fourth-rate French CFA and made his debut on September 9, 2017 under coach Rodrigues in a 2: 3 away defeat against Jura Sud Foot , when he played for Fares in the 61st minute of play Hassani came to the square. During the entire season he made twelve league appearances for the amateur team, which brought it to eighth place in Group B in the final standings and thus to a place in the middle of the table. In the two consecutive league games in February 2018, he scored one goal each. On March 3, 2018, Weah was brought into the team for the first time by Unai Emery , the coach of the professional team, for a league game of the professional team, as the regular players were spared in the attack after a Champions League game . 8312 days after his father's last game at Paris Saint-Germain, Timothy Weah made his professional debut in this encounter with ES Troyes AC when he was sent on the field in the 78th minute for the Argentine international Giovani Lo Celso . With the French, with whom he had signed a contract until June 30, 2020 in July 2017, he was then regularly on the bench of the professional team until the end of the season. In the following game against the last placed FC Metz , the left winger completed more time from the 70th minute. After he was unused on the bench in five league games, he came over the full for the first time on May 19, 2018 in a 0-0 draw against SM Caen for the champions of Ligue 1 2017/18, who had already been established for a few rounds Playing time for use. In addition to the French championship title, he also won the cup and the league cup with PSG this year .
Via Glasgow to Lille
At the beginning of January 2019, Weah moved to the Scottish Premiership at Celtic Glasgow until the end of the 2018/19 season . He came to 13 first division appearances, in which he scored 3 goals. With Celtic he won the championship and the cup .
For the season 2019/20 returned Weah to France and moved to Lille OSC . He received a contract with a term until June 30, 2024.
National team career
Way through the US junior national teams
In the summer of 2012, the then twelve-year-old Weah made his debut in the U-14 team of the United States , where he was brought in by coach Hugo Pérez . Besides Gio Calixtro and Chris Goslin, he was one of three players in the 2000 class. From 2015 at the latest, he was a member of the US U-15 national team , with which he took part in the Tournament delle Nazioni in Italy and made it to the final there. In the 3-2 final win over his senior colleagues from Austria , he achieved the provisional 3-0 lead in the 61st minute of the game after a presentation by Ayo Akinola . Under John Hackworth , under whom he had participated in the Tournament delle Nazioni and who had meanwhile taken over the US U-17 juniors again , he was invited to Florida for a series of friendly games in December of the same year. After various appearances up to this friendship tournament , he took part in the selection of the Montaigu tournament in March 2016 , where he was used in the games against the U-16 selections of England, Russia and France, contributing one assist and one goal . For the US-Americans, this was the first second tournament victory since the first win in 1992. At a series of other friendly international matches in Florida towards the end of 2016, Weah was once again taken into account and was able to attract attention with two goals. The following April and May, he was a member of the 20-strong US player levy, which at the CONCACAF U-17 Championship of 2017 in Panama participated. In the tournament he made it with his team to the final and was only defeated by the Mexicans of the same age on penalties ; Weah contributed two goals throughout the tournament. With this placement in the CONCACAF Cup, the Americans made it into the U-17 World Cup in India in 2017 .
After Hackworth had brought him into the 21-man squad of this finals, Weah acted in the further course of the tournament as a dangerous attacking player. After a third place in Group A and the associated move into the knockout phase, the young offensive player managed a hat trick in the 5-0 victory in the round of 16 against Paraguay's U-17s . Already in the following quarter-finals, the team was eliminated against the English U-17 selection . As in the preparation for the World Cup, he was also used in a few friendly matches after this and was unused on the substitute bench.
Breakthrough in the senior national team
Weah, who due to his origins would be eligible to play for Liberia , France , Jamaica and the United States , clearly decided in various interviews to appear in the senior national team of his native country, where he also spent most of his childhood and youth. On March 27, 2018, Weah made his senior national team debut when he came out on the pitch for Marky Delgado , another debutant, in a friendly 1-0 win against Paraguay in the 86th minute . This also made him the first player born in or after 2000 in the US national team. In another international match against Bolivia on May 28, 2018 , Weah started under national coach Dave Sarachan from the start and scored his first goal in the A-Team in a 3-0 win. At that time he was the fourth youngest goalscorer in the history of the US national team and in the same game surpassed his team-mate Josh Sargent , who was two days older and who also scored shortly before.
