Osvaldo Nicolás Fabián Gaitán (born February 23, 1988 in San Martín ), known as Nicolás Gaitán or Nico Gaitán , is an Argentine football player . He has been under contract with Lille OSC since January 2020 and prefers to play in midfield .

Career

In the club

Gaitán comes from the youth of Boca Juniors , which he left in 2007. From then on he played for the second team of the Argentine club. After another year he joined the first professional squad of the 23-time Argentine champions. The Argentine made his debut on June 2, 2008 against Arsenal de Sarandí , which was won 3-1. His first goal in the Primera División he scored in the game against CA Huracán , which was won 3-0. In the game he scored two of the three goals.

For the 2010/11 season , Gaitán moved to the Portuguese record champions Benfica Lisbon for an estimated 8.4 million euros , making it the second most expensive purchase in history for the 32-time Portuguese champions after Óscar Cardozo (11.6 million euros).

Gaitán has been wearing the Atlético Madrid jersey since the 2016/17 season. In June 2016 Atlético Madrid announced the signing of the winger, the transfer fee amounted to 25 million euros.

In February 2018, Gaitán's move to Dalian Yifang in China League One was announced. The transfer fee was 5.75 million euros. In March 2019 he made a free transfer to Chicago Fire in the MLS and in January 2020 again to OSC Lille .

In the national team

Gaitán made his debut not in a youth team for his country, but for the senior team when Argentina defeated Ghana 2-0 in a friendly on September 30, 2009 .
