Life

Unai Emery comes from a family of football goalkeepers from the Basque Hondarribia . He is the grandson of Pajarito Emery ("Little Bird"), who was the goalkeeper of Real Unión Irún in the 1920s and 1930s and who won the Copa del Rey twice. His father was a professional goalkeeper at Deportivo La Coruña and Recreativo Huelva , one of his uncles was a goalkeeper at CD Logroñés and Real Unión .

Career as a player

Emery played mainly in the Segunda División , the second highest division in Spain, and in the Segunda División B , the third highest division.

Career as a coach

In the 2004/05 season , Emery still played actively at Lorca Deportiva . During the season he succeeded his dismissed coach. A few months later, he was promoted to the Segunda División. In the following 2005/06 season , Lorca played against all expectations until the end for promotion to the Primera División.

For the 2006/07 season Emery moved to UD Almería . There he rose as second in the table at the end of the season. In the 2007/08 season he finished eighth in the Primera División with UD Almería at the end of the season .

Unai Emery (2011)

For the 2008/09 season Emery took over the coaching position at Valencia CF , becoming the youngest coach in the club's history. However, he was controversial among the fans, not least due to disagreements with club legend Vicente Rodríguez , whom he nominated as captain before the 2010/11 season , but only used sporadically and later suspended. Emery's expiring contract was extended for one year after the 2010/11 season. However, he was then not offered a new contract and signed Mauricio Pellegrino as the new head coach.

Emery was the new coach of the Russian first division team Spartak Moscow for the 2012/13 season . He signed a contract that ran until summer 2014, but was dismissed at the end of November 2012 due to unsuccessfulness. In January 2013 he succeeded Míchel at Sevilla FC , with whom he won the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League after a semi-final match against his former club, Valencia CF. In 2015 he defended this title with the team in the final against Dnieper Dnipropetrovsk , a year later he repeated the title defense in Basel with a win in the final against Liverpool . He was the only coach to win the Europa League three times in a row with Sevilla FC. Such a triple triumph in the European Cup was last achieved 38 years earlier with Bob Paisley with Liverpool FC.

For the 2016/17 season Emery took over the Ligue 1 team from Paris Saint-Germain from Laurent Blanc . He received a two-year contract until June 30, 2018. With PSG, he was runner-up in his first season in second place behind AS Monaco and, in addition to the French Supercup, also won the league cup and the cup, in the Champions League the last sixteen. In his second and final season he won the national Supercup, the League Cup, the Cup and the championship and thus all four national titles. In the Champions League he finished in the round of 16 for the second time in a row. After two years, Paris Saint-Germain and Unai Emery split with seven national titles won and because he could not win the Champions League. His successor at Paris Saint-Germain was the German coach Thomas Tuchel.

For the 2018/19 season , Emery succeeded Arsène Wenger at Arsenal FC . After finishing 5th in his debut season and having reached the final of the UEFA Europa League, which was lost 4-1 to Chelsea , the Gunners started the 2019/20 season below their own expectations : 8th after 13 games and 8th Points behind the Champions League ranks and a 1: 2 home defeat in the Europa League game against Eintracht Frankfurt led to Emery's dismissal on November 29, 2019.
