Javier "Javi" Gracia Carlos (born May 1, 1970 in Pamplona ) is a Spanish football coach and former player . The defensive midfielder has played over 400 games in the first and second Spanish leagues in 15 years .
Immediately after the end of his career, Gracia made the coaching license and started in the youth field.
Career
Player career
Javi Gracia started at the age of seven in the youth of CA Osasuna and joined the amateur division of Athletic Bilbao via UDC Txantrea .
There he was already in the first team at 19 and played 100 league games. By the end of his career in 2004, he played over 300 times in the two top Spanish leagues and scored 44 goals.
Coaching career
After his active career, he started as a youth coach at his old club Villarreal .
His first position at a professional club, FC Pontevedra , which he led into the first division, was followed by further positions in Spain, Greece and finally in Russia.
On January 21, 2018, he signed an 18-month contract with English first division club Watford . This was renewed in November 2018 until 2023 with an option for a further extension until 2026. Gracia led the club to eleventh place in the table and into the FA Cup final (0: 6 against Manchester City ) in the 2018/19 season . On September 7, 2019, he was sacked at Watford after only winning a point from the first four league games of the 2019/20 season . His successor, Quique Sánchez Flores , was introduced half an hour after he was released.
Gracia has been the head coach of Valencia CF since July 2020 .
