Career
societies
Ezequiel Garay began his career as a professional footballer in his native Argentina with the Newell's Old Boys, with whom he won the Apertura in 2004. In the summer of 2005, the then only 18-year-old defender moved to the Spanish first division club Racing Santander . The young Argentine quickly gained a regular place in the Cantabrians . Garay is considered to be an extremely dangerous defender, scoring nine goals this season in 2006/2007 , two of them from penalties in a 2-1 win over Real Madrid .
On May 19, 2008 it was announced that Ezequiel Garay was moving to league rivals Real Madrid and signed a six-year contract until 2014 with the Royal, trained by Bernd Schuster . However, the former U-21 international Garay was initially left on loan in Santander for a year. From the 2009/10 season Garay ran for Madrid. After he made 20 league appearances in his first year and was a constant on the real defense, he injured his knee seriously in August 2010 and was out until December. After that, he could no longer displace his well-rehearsed teammates and only made five more league appearances in the second half of the 2010/11 season . After all, he was used in the final of the Copa del Rey and was able to celebrate the cup victory.
Nevertheless, Garay moved to Benfica Lisbon for the 2011/12 season . There he immediately became a regular player and top performer and also played regularly in the UEFA Champions League . He experienced the most successful season with Benfica in 2013/14 , when the national triple of championship, cup win and league cup success could be celebrated. The club was also in the final of the UEFA Europa League , which was lost on penalties to Sevilla FC .
The Russian first division club Zenit St. Petersburg signed him for the 2014/15 season .
After two seasons in the Premjer Liga, Valencia CF signed Garay for the 2016/17 La Liga season.
National team
Garay was a member of the Argentine U-20 national team, which won the 2005 World Junior Championship in the Netherlands .
He made his senior national team debut on August 22, 2007 in Oslo in the 2-1 defeat in the international test match against Norway's national team . Garay took the Argentine selection at the Olympic football tournament in 2008 in part and, after the 1: 0 victory in the final against the selection of Nigeria Olympic champion . He was also part of the 2011 Copa America squad in his own country, but was not used during the tournament.
