Francis Coquelin (born May 13, 1991 in Laval ) is a French football player who has been under contract with Villarreal since 2020 .
Career
society
Beginnings and move to Arsenal FC
Francis Coquelin was born in Laval and started playing AS du Bourny in 2000 . In 2005 he switched to the most famous club in his hometown, Stade Laval . In March 2008 he was discovered by Arsenal scout Gilles Grimandi during a qualifying match for the U-17 European Football Championship in 2008 against Israel . In July 2008 he moved to the youth academy of Arsenal FC and despite an initial thigh injury, he was offered a contract. He took part in the 2008/09 season preparation of the professionals and played in the friendly matches against FC Barnet and Haladás Szombathely . On September 23, he completed his first competitive game in the 6-0 victory over Sheffield United in the League Cup , when he came on for Fran Mérida in the 71st minute . He scored his first goal against the Stoke City reserves in an Arsenal Reserves game on October 6 .
He played his first game in the starting lineup on September 22, 2009 in the League Cup against West Bromwich Albion , but was replaced in the 58th minute by Mark Randall . Less than a month later, he was substituted on for Fran Mérida in the last 16 against Liverpool in the 87th minute . His third and final game of the season he completed on January 24, 2010, when he played in the 3-1 loss to Stoke City from the start, but was substituted in the 67th minute for Aaron Ramsey .
On loan in Lorient
For the 2010/11 season he was awarded for one year to the French club FC Lorient . In exchange, Lorient's defender Laurent Koscielny came permanently to the "Gunners". On matchday 16, he worked out a first template in the 3: 6 defeat at OSC Lille when he played a pass to Kevin Gameiro , which he placed in goal. On February 26, 2011, he was sent off for the first time against Valenciennes FC . After he received the first yellow card in the 21st minute, the second and thus the dismissal followed in the 52nd minute. At the end of the loan period, Coquelin returned to England.
Return to Arsenal
On August 28, 2011 Coquelin made his Premier League debut in the 8-2 defeat of the "Gunners" at Manchester United . He played his second game on the starting bench against Tottenham Hotspur , Arsenal lost 2-1 and Coquelin was voted Man of the Match by the fans. He also made his UEFA Champions League debut on 6 December in a 3-1 defeat at Olympiacos . On January 6, 2012 Coquelin extended his current contract and remains with Arsenal FC for a few more years.
Coquelin in the Bundesliga
On July 5, 2013, the Bundesliga club SC Freiburg announced the commitment of Coquelin on loan. It was not known whether the contract included a purchase option.
Second return, renewed loan and breakthrough
Coquelin returned to Arsenal in the summer of 2014. On November 3, 2014, he switched to the Football League Championship at Charlton Athletic on an emergency loan, initially for a month on loan . At the end of November, the lending business was extended to the end of the year. Due to many injured players, coach Arsène Wenger ordered him back to Arsenal on December 12, 2014. A day later, Coquelin came on for his first season appearance in the Premier League when he was substituted on for Alexis Sánchez in the 4-1 win against Newcastle United in the 86th minute .
Change to Spain
On January 11th, Valencia CF announced Coquelin's signing. Part of his contract is a release clause for 80 million euros. In August 2020 Coquelin moved within the league to Villarreal FC .
National team
From 2007 to 2010 he played for the U-17, U-18 and U-19 national teams of France. His greatest success was winning the 2010 European Under-19 Football Championship . He has been playing for the U-20 national team since winning the U-19 European Championship.
Together with his teammate Gilles Sunu , he took part in the U-20 World Cup in Colombia in 2011 and finished fourth with France.
