Francisco Mérida Pérez , better known as Fran Mérida (born March 4, 1990 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish football player.

Career

The midfielder comes from the youth of FC Barcelona . Mérida has played for the Catalans since he was eight. In the summer of 2005 Mérida moved to England for Arsenal FC in London because his parents hoped he would have more opportunities there.

In 2007, a court ordered Mérida to pay a fee of 3.2 million euros to FC Barcelona because they had signed a contract with the Catalans. He played his first game for the first team in August 2006 in a friendly against Boreham Wood FC . On September 25, 2007 he played his first competitive game for Arsenal in the League Cup against Newcastle United . Two more league cup appearances followed at the end of the year. In April 2008, Mérida extended his long-term contract with Arsenal for an indefinite period.

In January 2008 he was loaned to the Spanish second division club Real Sociedad until the end of the season in order to collect match practice there. For the Spanish second division side, Mérida was used 17 times and scored once in the goal.

In the 2008/09 season , Mérida played his first Premier League game for Arsenal in a 3-1 win at Birmingham City . He came on in the 83rd minute for Samir Nasri . In the further course of the season he was used again in the league and three times in the league cup.

The following season Mérida played for the first time in Europe when he played in the Champions League group stage against Olympiacos . In this season scored his first league goal in Mérida also 2: 0 win over Bolton Wanderers .

For the 2010/11 season Mérida moved to Atlético Madrid on a free transfer and signed a four-year contract. For the 2011/12 season Mérida was loaned to Sporting Braga . For the 2012/13 season Mérida moved to the Hércules Club de Fútbol , in February 2013 to the Brazilian first division club Athletico Paranaense . Mérida came to CA Osasuna via the SD Huesca station for the 2016/17 season .

National team

In 2007 he was European champion as a playmaker for the Spanish U-17 team . Mérida was used in four out of five games, scored one goal and was then elected to the eleven of the tournament. In the same year he took part in the World Cup with Spain's U-17 selection . There he failed with his team in the final on Nigeria on penalties. Mérida's penalty was saved by the Nigerian goalkeeper. Mérida scored one goal in six games in that tournament.

In 2009 Mérida was appointed to the squad for the Junior World Cup , which took place in Egypt that year . Spain finished the group stage at this tournament with the maximum number of points and 13-0 goals, Mérida contributed two goals in two games. However, he could not prevent the subsequent early elimination in the round of 16 against Italy.

Two months earlier, he was eliminated from the group stage at the European Championships in Ukraine with a Spanish youth national team, the U-19s .
