Denis Dmitriyevich Cheryshev ( Russian Денис Дмитриевич Черышев; Spanish Denís Chéryshev ; English transcription Denis Dmitriyevich Cheryshev ; born December 26, 1990 in Nizhny Novgorod , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian football player . The striker, who also has Spanish nationality , is on loan from Villarreal CF to Valencia CF and is the current Russian international .

Club career

Denis Cheryshev is the son of former professional soccer player and Russian national player Dmitri Cheryshev . When he was signed by Sporting Gijón in 1996 , the then five-year-old Denis went to Spain with him . At the Asturian club, he began playing football as a youth. In 2001 he followed his father to FC Burgos before joining Real Madrid's youth academy in the summer of 2002 at the age of eleven . There he started in the Alevín A (U-12) team and went through various youth teams up to the A-youth in the 2008/09 season. On March 1, 2009, he made his debut in the game against Universidad Las Palmas in the club's second team, Real Madrid Castilla , in which he was only used sporadically. It was not until the 2010/11 season that he joined the squad of Real's second team, who were then playing in Segunda División B. In the 2011/12 season he rose with his team to the Segunda División .

On November 27, 2012 Cheryshev made his debut in the first team of Real Madrid in the cup match against CD Alcoyano . Before the start of the 2013/14 season , he extended his contract to June 30, 2017 and moved up to the first team. Before the end of the summer transfer period, the club loaned him to league rivals Sevilla FC for a year . With the Andalusians he made his debut on September 25, 2013 in the Primera División ; On February 20, 2014 he played his first game in the Europa League against NK Maribor , which his club won by beating Benfica Lisbon in the final . Cheryshev himself only made five competitive appearances in that season.

For the 2014/15 season, Cheryshev also moved to Villarreal on loan . There he played u. a. six times in the Copa del Rey and saw three yellow cards , the last in the semi-final second leg against FC Barcelona , in which Villarreal were eliminated. Cheryshev was suspended for the next cup game in the following season. Nevertheless, on December 2, 2015, he played with Real Madrid in the fourth main round of the Spanish Cup, the club's first game in this competition at FC Cádiz and contributed the goal to 1-0 for Madrid in the third minute. Neither head coach Rafael Benítez nor the club's management or the player himself was aware of the suspension at the beginning of the game , as Villarreal did not provide any information after the loan deal ended. When the suspension became known during the game, the player "immediately" changed the player. The FC Cádiz appealed against the evaluation of the result, the Cádiz right and Madrid excluded from the competition.

Cheryshev was awarded to Valencia CF on February 1, 2016 until the end of June .

For the 2016/17 season , Cheryshev returned not to Real Madrid, but to Villarreal , which signed him and provided him with a five-year contract until June 30, 2021.

In August 2018 he was awarded to Valencia CF, for which he was already active in 2016.

National team

Although Cheryshev also has Spanish citizenship, he decided to play for the Russian Federation when he was young. With the Russian U-21 team, he played all three games and scored one goal at the 2013 European Championship , when his team was eliminated in the preliminary round.

In the course of a test match in Krasnodar against the USA on November 14, 2012 Cheryshev made his debut in the senior national team coached by Fabio Capello . In the opening game of the 2018 World Cup in his own country, Cheryshev scored two goals in a 5-0 win against Saudi Arabia after being substituted on . He was voted Man of the Match . His father said in an interview with a Russian sports magazine that his son had been injected with growth hormone before the tournament. Cheryshev later said that he was not doped and that his father had been misunderstood. The team eventually reached the quarter-finals , where they lost to Croatia on penalties.
