Universidad Las Palmas was a Spanish football club from the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . The club, founded in 1994, played one season in the second highest division in Spain, the Segunda División .

history

Together with the Morales brothers, Gómez Cáceres sat down with lawyers and students and in 1994 founded the Vegueta - Universidad club.

The beginnings & ascents

The team started in the Segunda Regional. The first competitive game was lost 3-0 against Arguineguín Atlético. This group consisted exclusively of amateur kickers. This gave those responsible the incentive to hire José Manuel León as a trainer and to start a large project. In addition, some good lower-class players were brought in and the club was renamed "Universidad de Las Palmas CF". So it happened that the young team became a "winner" team and played in Segunda División B just four years after the club was founded . Only two years later you ended up in the Segunda División . In the second division season, the Canary Islands had to show a stadium suitable for professional football, which is why they had to switch to the place in Maspalomas . The neighboring club UD Las Palmas also refused to hold their rivals in their stadium. However, they were relegated again in the first season.

Merger and final years

In the 2000/01 season, Alfredo Morales decided to exclude the club's founder Gómez Cáceres from the club and to integrate into the larger club UD Las Palmas . Due to this merger and relegation in the same year from UD Las Palmas to the Segunda División , Universidad Las Palmas was not allowed to play the play-offs that were reached in the season.

This was also the reason why club founder Gómez Cáceres took over the club again at the end of Morales' presidency. He decided to separate again and thus become independent from UD Las Palmas .

In the summer of 2011, the club was disbanded after being sentenced to relegation to the Tercera División for outstanding salaries to its players .
