Friedrich (Fritz) Tüshaus (born August 3, 1832 in Münster ; † September 2, 1885 ibid) was a German genre and history painter as well as wood engraver and illustrator .

Life

Tüshaus was born as the son of the leather manufacturer Albert Heinrich Josef Tüshaus (1796–1864) and his wife Gertrud Anna, née Brockhausen (1801–1859), who was married in 1831. He is said to have shown artistic talent early on. After the Paulinum high school he attended the art academy in Munich from 1851 to study sculpture. With the same goal in the same year, Elisabet Ney from Münster set out for Munich. Also Melchior to the streets had gone to Cologne, there had begun an apprenticeship in sculpture. The impetus for choosing a career for the three Münster residents of the same age was very likely a pietà , the sculptorWilhelm Achtermann had created for the cathedral in Münster , the work of art caused euphoria in 1850 and had far-reaching influence. Because of a tuberculosis disease, which weakened him physically, Tüshaus broke off his studies in sculpture and turned to painting, which he studied from 1857 to 1858 at the Antwerp Art Academy . In 1869 he settled in Düsseldorf , which had become a center of European painting and the art trade thanks to its art academy and painting school . That is where his relatives Josef and Bernhard Tüshaus took their lives . Fritz Tüshaus also worked in Münster and in the Münsterland. He was one of the Münster artists who, in 1862, called for a competition for the Franz von Fürstenberg monument against the realization of the monument design by Elisabet Ney in Münster. In the mid-1870s he took part in exhibitions in Berlin and Düsseldorf and visited southern Germany on study trips. He found his final resting place in the old St. Mauritz cemetery in Münster.

His best-known works include The Battle between Teutons and Romans on the Rhine (1876, in the LWL Museum for Art and Culture ) and a picture of St. Nicholas (1863, now: in the Münster City Museum ). There were apparently several versions of the painting of St. Nicholas , which were repeatedly shown in exhibitions in Berlin and Düsseldorf between 1874 and 1876. Saint Nicholas presents oranges to the children of a city whose cityscape has ideal features of old German architectural styles. The church tower in the background resembles St. Ludgeri in Münster. The painter also copied paintings by famous masters. In 1869, Tüshaus created two large-format paintings on the history of Münster for the ballroom of the Münster town hall , depicting St. Liudger and Emperor Heinrich III. demonstrate. Tüshaus received numerous orders for the design of churches, in Münster for example for St. Aegidii, St. Ludgeri, St. Martini, St. Petri and for Liebfrauen Überwasser. For the St. Mauritz Church in Münster, Fritz Tüshaus created wall paintings around 1867–1878 (today repainted). He was also involved in the neo-Gothic painting of the cathedral, which went down in World War II. His sacred painting is influenced by the Nazarene . Tüshaus' works also include animal studies and portraits, especially of family members, friends, acquaintances and personalities from Münster. The painter's self-portrait, created around 1875 (here: detail, now: in the Münster City Museum), shows Fritz Tüshaus as a citizen, without any attribute of an artist.
