Status: end of career

Diego Martínez Penas (born December 16, 1980 in Vigo ), also known as Chamán , is a former Spanish football player and current coach . He has been the head coach of the first division club Granada CF since July 2018 .

Career

Born in Vigo , Diego Martínez Penas played as a full-back in the youth of Celta Vigo until he joined the youngsters of Cádiz FC in 1999 . There he was already completing a degree and, thinking that he would never make it to the professional level, from then on he concentrated on a career as a coach.

At the age of 20 Martínez resigned and joined the lower-class club CD Imperio de Albolote , where he was hired as a youth coach and also played football for a certain time in the men's team. In 2004 he switched to the Arenas CD . There he initially trained in the junior division, the following year he was appointed assistant coach and for the 2006/07 season he took over as head coach of the fourth division's first team . In the following season 2007/08 he was presented as coach of Motril CF , where he worked for two years.

In October 2009 Chamán moved to Sevilla FC , where he coached the C and U18 teams in the 2009/10 season. In the next season 2010/11 he was only responsible for the juniors and on May 22, 2012 he was promoted to assistant coach in the first team. Two years later he was named the new head coach of the reserve team Sevilla Atlético, which in the third-tier Segunda División B played. He led this team in his second season 2015/16 to promotion to the second highest Spanish division . There he managed a solid midfield placement in the next 2016/17 season .

At the end of the season he left Sevilla FC after around seven years and signed a two-year contract with the first division relegated CA Osasuna . With the ambitious Gorritxoak , he did not make the targeted promotion to the Primera División in the 2017/18 season and therefore resigned a year before his contract ended.

On June 14, 2018 Martínez Penas was presented as the new head coach of the second division club Granada CF. With the Nazaríes , he achieved the hoped-for rise to second in the table in the 2018/19 season , although he clearly had to admit defeat to his former club CA Osasuna and his successor Jagoba Arrasate in the fight for the championship title . At the beginning of the following 2019/20 season , the youngest coach in the division made a surprisingly strong start with his team. Granada already had 20 points after 10 league games and was in an excellent second place in the table. On November 14, 2019, he extended his contract until the summer of 2021. Even if he could not maintain this placement with the club in the next few weeks, he received the Miguel Muñoz trophy on December 16 from the sports newspaper Marca together with José Bordalás .
