Gaizka Garitano Aguirre (born July 9, 1975 in Bilbao ) is a Spanish football coach and former player . He has been the head coach of Athletic Bilbao since the beginning of December 2018 .

Player career

Gaizka Garitano started his career as a footballer in the reserve team of Athletic Bilbao . There he was under contract for seven years from 1992 to 1999, but was also loaned out twice. First in 1996/1997 at the second division club UE Lleida , where he played 14 games, then at the Basque club SD Eibar , for which he was also active in League 2 for a year.

In the summer of 1999 Garitano finally moved to the second division Eibar. There he was loaned to the third division CD Ourense in the 2000/2001 season, where he was able to build on his form from his time in Bilbao. The following years Garitano always played as a fixture in midfield Eibars before 2004/2005 again the promotion to League 1 was missed.

In the summer of 2005 Garitano went to the first division club Real Sociedad . There he was used regularly in his first season and scored three goals in 20 games. After that there were already 27 appearances, but the Basques were relegated to the Segunda División . Gaizka Garitano was a regular there too. After relegation to the third division, Gaizka Garritano ended his football career in 2009 at the age of 34, after including over 300 games in the Spanish second division. He moved as an assistant coach to SD Eibar, who had also just been relegated to the 3rd division, and at the beginning of the 2012/13 season he became the coach of the first professional team, which rose to the 2nd division in 2013 and the Primera División in 2014 .
