Mikel San José Domínguez (born May 30, 1989 in Villava-Atarrabia ) is a Spanish football player who has been playing for Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Primera División since 2010 .
Career
society
His professional game debut was on loan from Liverpool FC on September 17, 2009 in the Europa League round game against FK Austria Wien , when he came on in the 83rd minute for Carlos Gurpegui . His first league game, however, he completed almost two months later, before he came on in the 2-0 away win against Racing Santander a minute before the end of the game for Pablo Orbaiz . He scored his first professional goal in the Europa League second leg against Austria Wien, when he scored 2-0 in the 62nd minute (final score 3-0). Nine days later he was also able to celebrate his first goal in the league, in the 2-1 away win against Real Saragossa he scored in the 61st minute to make it 1-0.
For the 2010/11 season , San José signed a five-year contract with Athletic Bilbao. The transfer fee to Liverpool was 2.7 million euros. With Athletic he qualified for the UEFA Europa League 2011/12 . There the defender reached with his club after victories a. a. the final of the European Cup via Manchester United , FC Schalke 04 and Sporting Lisbon , but lost to Atlético Madrid in the final .
National team
In a friendly against France on September 4, 2014, Mikel San José was used for the first time in the national team . He played as a central defender for over 90 minutes. In qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2016 , he was in the squad several times and in the last group game against Ukraine on October 12, 2015, he played his first competitive game in the national jersey. Then he was also included in Spain 's EM squad . In the tournament, however, he remained one of three field players who did not come to a use.
