List of train stations in France |
The Toulouse-Matabiau Train Station is the largest train station in the French city of Toulouse in the Haute-Garonne . With almost 20,000 passengers a day, it is one of the busiest train stations in the south of France.
Until the middle of the 19th century, Toulouse had no rail connection. In 1853, Émile Pereire and his brother Jakob founded the CF du Midi railway company . Three years later the line from Agen to Toulouse was opened and extended to Bordeaux in 1857 .
The current station building was built between 1903 and 1905 and replaced the older and smaller building. It was built by Marius Toudoire , who had previously built the Bordeaux Saint-Jean and Gare de Lyon train stations . The station took on the nickname of the surrounding community of Matabiau.
Transport links
The station can be reached via regular TGV , Intercités and TER trains. From Toulouse there are long-distance connections to, among others, Paris ( Gare Montparnasse and Gare d'Austerlitz ), Dijon , Lille , Bordeaux-Saint-Jean , Nice , Montpellier-Saint-Roch and Marseille-Saint-Charles . TER Midi-Pyrénées regional trains run in a total of 14 directions. There is also a connection to the Métro Toulouse .
From 2020 onwards, Toulouse will be connected directly to the TGV network via the planned high-speed route Bordeaux – Toulouse . The journey time to Paris should be shortened from the current five hours to just over three hours.
