The Gare de Montpellier-Saint-Roch ( French : Gare de Montpellier-Saint-Roch ) is the main station of the southern French city of Montpellier . It is a traffic junction in the Occitania region and a stop and end point of various TGV lines.

history

The city's first train station opened in January 1839. It was the end point of the route from Sète . This station was about 300 meters west of today's station. In 1845 the line from Nîmes reached Montpellier and its station was designed by Charles Didion near the Place de la Comédie , despite long discussions about the route. So z. B. two bridges are built. In 1852 the two stations were merged as part of the route planning Bordeaux - Marseille . The station on the line from Sète became a locomotive and goods depot, which was not closed until 1950. All train connections to and from Montpellier have now been cleared at the station on the Nîmes line. That is why 1845 also applies to the opening year of today's Montpellier train station.

After the Second World War, electrification began, and a bus station and parking garage were also built. On August 28, 1973, the last steam-powered train left the station. In 1977 a new bus station was opened above the tracks, which was relocated to another location in 2000 and replaced by a multi-storey car park for short-term parkers - the old car park was demolished during the tram construction work.

In the 1980s, Montpellier was connected to the TGV network. For this milestone, the station was rebuilt from scratch and received its current shape. It was inaugurated by Mayor Georges Frêche on May 21, 1982 after nine months of no traffic . In 1983 the first TGV ran to Paris-Gare de Lyon . The travel time was 4 hours and 30 minutes, today it is 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Since the 2000s, the station has undergone renovations under the project name “Noveau Saint-Roch”. The facade was lengthened and an approx. 200 meter long counter hall made of metal and glass was built over the tracks, which was inaugurated in December 2014. The “Noveau Saint-Roch” residential area was built on the site of the former freight yard. The station received a tram connection in July 2000 through the Transports de l'agglomération de Montpellier (TaM) .

Until 2005, the station was named Montpellier . The addition of "Saint-Roch" to the name is reminiscent of Rochus von Montpellier , who was born in the city in 1295 and died there in 1327. The adjacent inner city quarter is named after him. The name is official, it is also displayed in full on tickets, and the TaM also uses the name Gare Saint-Roch on its network maps . After Rochus there are also various other facilities in the city, including a. a church and a hospital, named.

Since the opening of the new Gare de Montpellier-Sud-de-France at the Nîmes and Montpellier bypass in 2018, some long-distance departures have been relocated there, but the majority of long-distance trains continue to serve the Saint-Roch station, which is close to the city center. For the future it is to be expected that further long-distance lines will be relocated to the new station.

Charles Didion was responsible as the architect of the original station . In the course of the TGV construction, the largest part was rebuilt, but the facade was retained because of its uniqueness. The station is partially built over and has 6 tracks, which are marked with the letters from A to F. There are two side and two central platforms. The station building faces north. Rue Maguelone runs from Place de la Comédie to the train station. The new Antigone district begins on the east side of the station . The tracks towards Nîmes leave the station northwards, while those towards Sète run southwards.

The TGV high-speed train runs from Montpellier to Lyon and on to Paris Gare de Lyon and other destinations in France. Since December 2013, Montpellier-Saint-Roch has also been the stop for the Spanish AVE high-speed trains from Barcelona to Lyon and from Madrid to Marseille as well as the TGV double-decker trains from Barcelona to Paris. Express trains with Corail cars run on the Bordeaux-Saint-Jean - Toulouse-Matabiau –Montpellier-Saint-Roch– Marseille-Saint-Charles route .

The TER Languedoc-Roussillon connects Montpellier-Saint-Roch with various places and cities in the province.

City public transport

Until July 2000, the bus station for suburban buses was located above the “covered” platforms. However, due to construction work for the tram , it was moved to the Pont de la Sète. The TaM has served the station with one tram line since July 2000, two since December 2006 and four since April 2012.
