The Lyon-Part-Dieu station is the most important station in the French city of Lyon , ahead of the Lyon-Perrache station . It is located on the Lyon – Genève railway line and is an important hub in the long-distance and regional transport network in the Rhône-Alpes region.

history

The station went into operation on June 13, 1983 after five years of construction in place of the Lyon-Brotteaux station, which had been closed the day before . This was part of an urbanization program that included the establishment of a second city center in Lyon. The neighboring shopping center of the same name is one of the largest in the country. Soon after it opened, it overtook the previous Lyon-Perrache main station, although it is more centrally located, as the most important station in the city and became an important hub in the TGV network. Through TGV trains usually only stop in Part-Dieu, Perrache is only served by trains ending in Lyon - Part-Dieu is only not served by the trains that branch off to the LGV Rhône-Alpes in front of the city and instead at the station Lyon-Saint-Exupéry TGV stop, so do not affect it.

In 2010 the Rhônexpress tram went into operation to the airport.

The station has six passenger platforms and a total of eleven platform edges. The eleventh track was put into operation in December 2011. In 2001 and 2008 it was expanded by three tracks and reached its current size. There is also a platform-free through track.

The train station is in the east of the city, just outside the city center. In the immediate vicinity is the Tour Part-Dieu, the second tallest building in the city.

Long-distance transport

The TGV serves the station with various destinations, so that numerous cities in France such as Paris, Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Bordeaux, Nantes, Toulouse, Perpignan, Metz, Dijon, Melun, Rennes, Poitiers and Le Havre can be reached without changing trains. The TGV also runs on international connections to Brussels and Geneva . The opening of the LGV Rhin-Rhône in December 2011 led to new rail connections: Since March 23, 2012, the TGV Duplex has offered a direct connection from Frankfurt via the LGV Rhin-Rhône to Lyon and on to Marseille. With the timetable change in December 2013, the high-speed connection operated by Elipsos with an AVE train between Lyon and Barcelona-Sants station went into operation.

In addition, the station is served by various Intercités trains. The day and night connections lead to Hendaye , Irun , Quimper , Metz, Strasbourg and Geneva , among others .

Regional traffic

The four regional transport systems TER Rhône-Alpes , TER Bourgogne , TER PACA and TER Auvergne offer connections to Marseille, Avignon, Geneva, Grenoble, Saint-Etienne, Evian and Valence. Most lines also go to Perrache station.

The number of users at the station has increased rapidly. At the time of opening it was frequented by 35,000 travelers every day, today there are 140,000. In 2010, 51.1 million people used the station. It operates at the limits of its capacity and was expanded by three tracks in 2008 and 2011. 220,000 travelers are expected every day by 2030. An extension is inevitable, so an underground station is under discussion. Urban planning limits are set for an above-ground extension. Also under discussion is an increased use of TGV trains via the Saint-Exupery station in order to relieve Part-Dieu.

Since April 2016, the first public hearings have been going on about the extension of the station by a twelfth platform ("L"). It should be located east of track K and share the platform with this track. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2017/2018. Commissioning is scheduled for 2022. The costs are estimated at 107 million euros.
