Iker Muniain Goñi ( ˈiker muniˈain ˈgoɲi ; born December 19, 1992 in Pamplona , Navarra ) is a Spanish football player who plays for Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Primera División .

Club career

Like so many athletic players born in Pamplona , Muniain never played for his hometown club CA Osasuna , but for the small UDC Chantrea, from the autonomous region of Navarre . As Navarre is a traditional Basque territory , his great talent did not remain hidden for long from the scouts of Athletic Bilbao , who are omnipresent throughout the Basque Country due to the self-imposed, consistent transfer policy.

In 2005 he signed his first contract in Bilbao, which was followed by a rise that is unparalleled. In record time he went through all the youth teams of the "Rojiblancos" and advanced to become the largest rough diamond of the club. This was not hidden from the coach of the professional team, Joaquín Caparrós , who let him train with the professional team at the age of 14.

As early as February 2008 he came to his first appearance for the professional team of Athletic in the friendly against SDA Amorebieta. In 2009 he was accepted into the B-team of Athletic, for which he scored 2 goals in 14 appearances this season.

For the 2009/10 season he was finally accepted into the professional squad, which resulted in several milestones for the club and players.

  • On July 30, 2009, he came into the Europa League qualifier against Young Boys Bern in the 59th minute as a substitute for Gaizka Toquero . This mission made him the youngest ever used player in an official game in Bilbao at the age of 16, 7 months and 11 days.
  • A week later he scored a goal in the second leg against the Swiss. That goal made him the youngest scorer in a competitive match for Bilbao.
  • On August 30, 2009 he made his professional debut in the Primera División in a 1-0 win against Espanyol Barcelona . Here, too, his commitment made him the youngest player ever to wear the Athletic jersey in the first division.
  • On October 4, 2009 he became the youngest scorer in the history of the Primera División with his goal in the 77 minute to 2-2 in the league game against Real Valladolid . This title was taken from him on August 18, 2012, when the Cameroonian Fabrice Olinga, aged 16 years and 98 days, scored the winning goal in the 1-0 home win of FC Málaga against Celta Vigo .

In December 2009, the offensive player extended his contract until 2015. His minimum transfer fee was set at 36 to 45 million euros at that time.

National team

With the Spanish U-17 national team, he took part in the 2009 European Championship in Germany . The team around Muniain and Marc Muniesa disappointed in the course of the tournament and were eliminated in the preliminary round. With the Spanish U-21 national team , he was European champion at the EM 2011 in Denmark , where they beat Switzerland 2-0 .

On February 29, 2012 Muniain made his debut in a friendly against Venezuela in the senior team . He came on in the 75th minute for Cesc Fàbregas .
