Group stage
The defending champions and the champions of the leagues from 1st to 7th place in the UEFA five-year ranking were drawn from pot 1 regardless of their club coefficient, all other teams were drawn from the other three pots according to their club coefficient. Since Real Madrid, the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League winners , have also become champions in their national league, Shakhtar Donetsk, the champions of the nation (Ukraine) that is eighth in the UEFA five-year ranking, moved into pot 1.
The draw took place in Monaco on August 24, 2017.
32 teams from 17 national associations took part in the group stage. 22 teams were directly qualified, plus ten clubs (five each via the champions path and the placement path) from the qualifying rounds.
The group winners and runners-up qualified for the round of 16, the group third played in the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League , the group fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
- Number of points in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of goals in direct comparison
- Number of away goals in direct comparison
- If, after applying criteria 1-4, two or more teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–12 will be applied.
- Goal difference from all group matches
- higher number of goals scored
- higher number of away goals scored
- higher number of wins
- higher number of away wins
- lower number of minus points through yellow and red cards (yellow card 1 minus point, red card 3 minus points, yellow-red card 3 minus points)
- Club coefficients
