Promotion / relegation
Places 16 and 17 in the Eredivisie and the eight best-placed teams in the Eerste Divisie play in three play-off rounds, each with a round trip for promotion or relegation . Second teams from Eredivisie clubs cannot be promoted to the Eredivisie and are therefore excluded from the play-offs. This concerned the first-placed second team from Ajax Amsterdam and the fifth-placed second team from PSV Eindhoven . Relay winners of the Eerste Divisie, played in four phases, are qualified for the play-offs, regardless of their position in the overall table, so FC Dordrecht was qualified for the play-offs in 13th place. Since Fortuna Sittard rose directly to the Eredivisie as second in the table and the best-placed club eligible for promotion, the clubs in positions 3, 4, 6 to 10 and 13 took part in the play-offs. In the first round, the four lowest-ranked teams from the Eerste Divisie play against each other (13 against 8 and 10 against 9). The two winners of the first round will meet the 16th and 17th of the Eredivisie in round 2. At the same time, the four higher ranked teams in the Eerste Divisie play against each other (7 against 3 and 6 against 4). In round 3, the four winners from the second round meet. The two winners of the third round qualify for the Eredivisie 2018/19 .
