The BGL Ligue 2017/18 was the 104th season of the highest Luxembourg division in men's football. It was opened on August 4, 2017 with the game of the promoted US Hostert against champions and cup winners F91 Dudelange and ended according to plan with the last match day on May 18, 2018.

Venues of the BGL Ligue 2017/18

Attendees

For the 2017/18 season, the clubs that had occupied places 1 to 11 in the previous season were joined by the two direct promoters from the honorary doctorate and the winner of the barrage game between the third of the honorary doctorate and the 12th of the BGL Ligue of the season 2016/17 added. As the master of the honorary doctorate, US Esch returned to excellence after 92 years. Runner-up FC Rodingen 91 managed to return to the BGL Ligue after 14 years. US Hostert prevailed in the barrage game against the 12th of the BGL Ligue Jeunesse Canach and rose to the BGL Ligue for the third time after 2011 and 2014. As in the previous year, all participating teams came from the southern half of the country without exception.

Before the start of the season

Two player commitments by Europa League participant Progrès Niederkorn caused a sensation before the start of the season.

The midfielder Emmanuel Françoise , signed by the league cup winner CS Fola Esch , tested positive for doping. Progrès announced that Françoise was asthmatic and had taken the drug terbutaline , which has been on the list of prohibited substances since January 1, 2017, before his old club's game against Dudelange on May 14, 2017 . However, he did not take this to improve performance, but for purely medical reasons. He was not banned for this offense, only given a warning. The Luxembourg Anti-Doping Agency (ALAD) appealed against this judgment to the “Conseil supérieur de discipline contre le dopage”. The decision is expected to be made at the end of October 2017 as to whether the appeal will be dismissed as inadmissible due to a formal error or whether the case will have to be tried again.

Mario Mutsch's move from the Swiss first division club FC St. Gallen to FC Progrès caused a curiosity . Since Mutsch has never been active for a Luxembourg club before in his career, the captain of the Luxembourg national team counts towards the foreigner contingent of his new club according to the so-called premier license . Since 2010, this has obliged the clubs of the BGL Ligue to include at least seven players on the match report who began their careers in Luxembourg.

Only one club started the season with a new coach. Victoria Rosport promoted the previous assistant trainer Jürgen Tücks to head coach. The 53-year-old German who u. a. coached the youth department of Eintracht Trier , replaced René Roller, who acted as assistant coach.

Season course

First round

1st matchday

Jonathan Joubert (F91 Dudelange)

The 2017/18 season began with a big surprise. At the start of the season, promoted US Hostert beat the reigning champion and cup winner F91 Dudelange 2-1. At the first meeting six years earlier, Hostert was defeated by the high favorite F91 at the same place with 1: 9. Last year's fifth FC UNA Strassen only managed a happy 2-2 in front of their home crowd with a goal in stoppage time against promoted Rodingen. European Cup participant Fola Esch didn’t get past a 1-1 draw against Victoria Rosport in front of his own audience. In the Escher city duel, record champion Jeunesse didn’t miss anything against newly promoted Union Sportive and won 4-0 against local rivals in the smallest stadium of the BGL Ligue. With the same result, runner-up FC Differdingen 03 won against US Bad Mondorf and took the lead together with Jeunesse.

2nd matchday

On the second matchday, Jeunesse Esch and Differdingen, the two teams that had won their opening games 4-0 and were at the top with equal points and goals after the first matchday, met each other. On the day of its 110th anniversary, host Jeunesse claimed the lead in the table 3-1. FC RM Hamm Benfica , FC Progrès and Hostert also celebrated their second win in the second game , while RFCU , Pétange , US Esch and Bad Mondorf continued to miss out on points.

3rd matchday

Jeunesse Esch lost 2-0 to defending champion F91 on matchday three despite a good performance and had to give up the championship lead. With a 6-0 away win at UNA Strassen, FC Progrès took the lead. National player Stefano Bensi from CS Fola tore a cruciate ligament in the game against RFCU and was out until the penultimate matchday. First coach discharge of the season: On August 21, 2017, UNA Strassen announced the separation from Patrick Grettnich.

4th matchday

FC Progrès continued their flawless start series on matchday four and landed their second runaway win in a row with a 7-1 win against Union Titus Pétange. As against Strassen, top striker Aleksandre Karapetian scored a three-pack. The newcomers from Rodingen and Hostert, who won their home games against championship favorites FC Differdingen 03 and CS Fola, stayed in close contact. Fola, like RFCU and UNA Strassen, which parted 1: 1, remained without a win. There was that for newcomer US Esch, who won the first "three" with a 2-1 win in Rosport.

5th matchday

After the international break, Jeunesse Esch and the previously undefeated promoted US Hostert opened the 5th matchday. Despite being outnumbered and 1: 2 deficit, Jeunesse turned the game around and won 4: 2. City rivals Fola achieved their first win of the season with a 4-0 win at FC UNA Strassen, which slipped to last place due to the defeat in the first game under the new coach Roland Schaack. Defending champion F91 Dudelange beat newcomer FC Rodingen 91 7-0. It was the fourth win in a row for F91 and the first defeat of the season for Rodingen. Front runners FC Progrès kept their clean slate with newly promoted US Esch, but only scored the decisive goal shortly before the end of the game.

6th matchday

Three teams celebrated their first win of the season on matchday 6. The bottom of the table, Strassen, won 2-1 at US Hostert, RFCU Luxemburg won by converting two penalty kicks with the same result against US Esch and Bad Mondorf beat Rodingen 1-0 with a goal in the final minute. With this away success Bad Mondorf left the relegation ranks for the first time this season. At the top, FC Progrès and F91 expanded their winning streak. In the Differdinger city derby Progrès retained the upper hand against FC 03 with the ninth goal of the season from Aleksandre Karapetian 1-0. Dudelange celebrated their fifth victory in a row in Rosport 4-0. The hosts slipped to a relegation zone for the first time after their fourth defeat in a row.

Daniel da Mota (RFC Union Luxembourg)

On September 27, 2017, the relegation-threatened German second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern announced the commitment of Fola coach Jeff Strasser . The previous assistant coach Cyril Serredszum became the new head coach .

7th matchday

In the top game of the seventh matchday, F91 Dudelange and championship leaders FC Progrès met. F91 won 3-2 and took the lead for the first time this season due to the better goal difference. For FC Progrès it was the first defeat in the league after six wins in a row. As the first pursuer of the top duo, the surprise team from Hamm Benfica moved into third place with a 2-0 win against Hostert, as Jeunesse Esch could not get beyond a draw against Rodingen. With the third win in a row, CS Fola climbed to fifth place, for the first time without coach Strasser. In the city duel against newly promoted US Esch, Fola narrowly won 1-0. US Esch remained bottom of the table. Rosport suffered the fifth defeat in a row in Bad Mondorf and stayed one point ahead of US Esch in penultimate place. FC UNA Strassen was still on the relegation site after a 2-1 defeat in Pétange.

8th matchday

After another international break, FC Progrès took over the top of the table again with a 3-2 win against Bad Mondorf on matchday eight, as F91 did not get beyond a 1-1 at RFCU Luxembourg. In the game of the season with the highest number of goals to date, CS Fola defeated runners-up Differdingen 6-3 and moved up to one point against FC RM Hamm Benfica, who defended third place with a 2-2 draw in Rodingen. In the table cellar Victoria Rosport gained some air in the relegation battle with the second win of the season against Jeunesse Esch. Since Strassen also won his game against bottom of the table US Esch, RFCU Luxembourg slipped to a direct relegation zone for the first time despite winning points against champions and cup winners F91.

9th matchday

The top game of the 9th matchday between F91 and the upswing CS Fola was decided by the hosts from Dudelange after a 2-0 and 3-1 lead just under 4: 3, with F91 playing outnumbered for half an hour. The table leader from Niederkorn won 3-0 at Jeunesse Esch. Since the third RM Hamm Benfica failed 2-1 in the home game against Rosport, the chasing trio lost touch with the leading duo. Differdingen made up three places with a sovereign 5: 0 against UNA Strassen and jumped to 5th place. RFCU Luxembourg (2: 4 at Bad Mondorf) and US Esch, who lost 3 0: 3 against Pétange at home, remained on the direct relegation places.

10th matchday

In the Friday game of the 10th match day, RM Hamm Benfica consolidated their third place with a surprising 3-1 at leaders FC Progrès. In addition to three points, Niederkorn also lost top striker Karapetian and captain Sebastien Thill by being sent off. The reigning champions F91 Dudelange did not miss the opportunity and took over the top of the table again with a 4-1 win at UNA Strassen. Differdange moved up to fourth place with a 2-0 win at Union Titus Pétange. Nothing new in the basement: The three bottom of the table lost their games, which had consequences for Jacques Muller at RFCU Luxembourg after the 2-1 home defeat against Jeunesse Esch. As the second coach in the current season, he had to vacate his seat early and was replaced by Patrick Grettnich, who himself had been fired from FC UNA Strassen in August.

12th matchday

Due to the international break, the 11th matchday was moved to December. Thus, the league games continued with the 12th matchday. Leader of the table F91 won 6: 1 against bottom US Esch as well as FC Progrès in a 5-0 home win against Rosport. In the chase duel, CS Fola won against Hamm Benfica and moved up to the European Cup again. Under the new coach Patrick Grettnich, RFCU achieved their second win of the season against Rodingen and improved to the relegation place.

13th matchday

On the last day of the first half of the season, the engine of the two top teams stalled. F91 did not get beyond a draw in the goalless encounter against Differdingen, nor did their competitor Niederkorn in the 1-1 draw at home against the strong promoted team from Hostert. With a 3-0 win in Rodingen, Fola moved up to third place for the first time this season, qualifying for participation in the UEFA Europa League, and ousted neighbor Jeunesse, who won 3: 3 against Pétange despite 2: 0 and 3: 1- Leadership dropped two important points. RFCU wintered with a 2-0 win at Rosport on the last non-relegation rank. This caused the Victoria to slide onto the Barrageplatz. On the direct relegation places were UNA Strassen and, with only one victory, US Esch.

In the last game of the year on December 9th, Progrès Niederkorn was able to achieve an undisputed 4-0 victory over FC Rodingen 91 on the 11th matchday. The other games fell victim to the weather, as did the 14th matchday. The FLF then decided on December 13th not to play any more games in 2017.

Second half

11th matchday

The other fixings of the 11th match day were made up on February 18, 2018. The outstanding game was the 3: 3 between the Escher city rivals Jeunesse and CS Fola. Ryan Klapp scored all three goals for Fola. The 3: 3 goal by Jeunesse captain Miloš Todorović in the 83rd minute caused a stir, which is said to have been preceded by an alleged handball. The duel between the two capital city clubs Hamm Benfica and RFCU also ended in a draw. The 1-1 win was converted into a 3-0 win for RFCU, however, as Hamm Benfica had used a player who was not eligible to play due to a suspension. With a 2: 1 against Union Titus Petingen, F91 maintained the lead in the standings. There were no changes on the relegation ranks.

Due to the wintry weather conditions, the FLF completely canceled the 15th matchday on February 24, 2018. The season continued on March 7th with the 14th matchday.

14th matchday

Rosport won 4-2 in Strassen and increased the gap to 5 points on a direct relegation zone. Dudelange and Progrès each won their games 4-2. Differdange defeated Jeunesse 2-0 and for the first time since the first matchday moved to a place that qualified for participation in a European competition.

17th matchday

The 17th matchday, which was played between the 14th and 15th matchday due to numerous game failures, ensured that F91 and Progrès shared the lead with 50:18 goals and 41 points each. Except for the exchange of places between Hamm Benfica and RFCU, there were no changes in the table on this match day.

15th matchday

F91 lost the championship lead through a 1.3 defeat at Jeunesse, who in turn sniffed at the European Cup places. There was level on points with F91 due to a goal less of FC Progrès, who failed to break away with a 1-1 draw against the penultimate streets. RFCU, Pétange and Rodingen won and moved away from the relegation place.

18th matchday

The 18th matchday was carried out after the 15th matchday. F91 took over the lead again with a 4-0 win over Rosport, as Progrès "only" won 2-1 in Differdange. Due to the Differdingen defeat, the two Escher clubs CS Fola and Jeunesse pushed themselves back to one point on a Europa League place. At the bottom of the table, UNA Strassen sent a sign of life with their first win since matchday 8 with a 3-0 win over Hostert.

19th matchday

On the 19th matchday there was a summit between FC Progrès and F91 as well as the goal scorer Aleksandre Karapetian and David Turpel . In front of 2,186 spectators at the Stade Jos Haupert , the reigning champions from Dudelange got the upper hand 3-1. The direct comparison of the goal scorers also failed with two goals for Turpel against one by Karapetian for F91. CS Fola stormed spectacularly to 3rd place with a 9-0 win against local rivals and designated relegated US Esch, displacing Differdingen, who did not get more than 1-1 at RFCU. FC 03 was also overtaken by Jeunesse, who took 4th place with Fola after a 3-1 win at Rodingen. UNA Strassen celebrated their second victory in a row with 4: 2 against Pétange and found their way back to the non-relegation places.

20th matchday

After FC Progrès dropped points with a 0-0 draw at Bad Mondorf, F91 took the opportunity and increased the lead over the pursuers to 5 points after a 2-0 win against RFCU. In a direct comparison, Fola distanced the Differdingen with a 2-0 at FC 03 from a Europa League place and expanded their lead on Differdingen. Strassen won 1-0 at bottom US Esch and left the direct relegation rank. Victoria Rosport slipped on after a 1: 4 at Jeunesse.

Dwayn Holter (FC Differdange 03)

16th matchday

With the exception of CS Fola regaining 3rd place, there were no significant changes on matchday 16. F91 improved their goal difference against their pursuers with a 4-0 win against Hamm Benfica, as Progrès "only" won 3-1 in Pétange. Differdingen beat Rodingen with two goals from Dwayn Holter 5-1. Rosport moved by a 2-0 with the tattered bottom US Esch to one place on the first non-relegation place.

21st matchday

From matchday 21, the championship was continued in the planned order of the match days. In the top game, F91 showed no nakedness at third CS Fola Esch and won 3-2 with three goals from David Turpel. In the duel of the second against the fourth, Progrès won 1-0 against Jeunesse. Differdange could not use the defeat of the Fola and did not get more than 2-2 at UNA Strassen.

22nd matchday

The first decision of the season was made on the 22nd matchday. After a 1: 2 home defeat against Hostert, the bottom of the table, US Esch, was the first to be relegated and had to leave the BGL Ligue after just one season. On the other hand, the tension in the fight for relegation grew. Rodingen didn't get more than 1: 1 against the penultimate from Rosport, but pushed UNA Strassen to Barrageplatz. While F91, Progrès and Fola won their games at the top, Jeunesse and Differdingen lost ground due to surprising home defeats in the battle for a place in the European Cup.

23rd matchday

The duel between the city rivals between Fola and Jeunesse Esch remained without a winner. Both parted 1: 1. Thus, Fola defended the lead of three points over Jeunesse in the battle for third place. In the relegation battle, Rodingen slipped to penultimate place for the first time this season after a 0: 1 in Niederkorn after the rivals from Strassen and Rosport won their games. On matchday 16, Rodinger's lead on a direct relegation rank was still eight points.

24th matchday

While the teams at the top didn't show any nakedness and decided their games clearly for themselves, the teams at the bottom of the table moved even closer together. Strassen and Rosport clearly lost their games, Rodingen got a point against RFCU and improved to the Barrageplatz.

25th matchday

With 35 goals in seven games, the penultimate match was also the matchday with the second-most goals this season. F91 closed the sack with a 6-0 win in Differdange and secured their 14th championship title. Also runner-up FC Progrès didn’t let anything burn at 6: 1 in Hostert. Fola Esch eliminated all doubts about participating in the Europa League with a 7-1 win against Rodingen , especially since pursuers Jeunesse lost the last theoretical chance at Europe with a 0-1 in Pétange. In the relegation battle, UNA Strassen clearly won 6-0 against Hamm Benfica and could no longer relegate directly. On the Barrageplatz, Rosport pushed his way through a 2-2 at RFCU.

26th matchday

In the last still open decision about relegation, the penultimate Rodingen and the fourth from last from Strassen met on the last day of the season. In order to avoid direct relegation, the hosts should have won, but were defeated by a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time with 2: 3 and had to take the direct route back to the honorary doctorate. The second relegated team was confirmed after the 22nd matchday, with US Esch, who against neighbor Jeunesse at 1: 2 also by conceding a goal in stoppage time with an honorable goodbye from the BGL Ligue after only one season. With the victory of Strassen in Rodingen it was not enough for Victoria Rosport to stay in the league. Despite a 2-1 win against CS Fola, Rosport had to play 12th in the barrage game against the third of the honorary doctorate. At Fola, Stefano Bensi returned to the field for 28 minutes after tearing a cruciate ligament on Matchday 3. For the promoted Hostert, the season ended somewhat disappointing despite relegation and 8th place, after the team had been in close contact with the European Cup prizes for a long time. The season went similarly for FC RM Hamm Benfica, which after a strong start to the season broke in the second half of the season and finished in 10th place. With 5th place and a clear gap to CS Fola and Jeunesse, Differdingen, who started as runner-up last year, missed its season goal of participating in a European competition. In contrast, US Bad Mondorf and RFCU finished in 6th and 7th place after a weak start. Union Titus Petingen was always on a place between 7 and 10 during the season except for the first two game days and finished in 9th place.

Stadiums and spectators

Before the start of the season, CS Fola Esch had a new grandstand built in their home stadium Stade Émile Mayrisch for participation in the qualifying matches for the UEFA Europa League in order to meet the minimum requirements of UEFA.

In order to be able to meet the requirements in the top division, the venue of the promoted US Esch Zone d'activité Lankhelz in the district of Lallingen was equipped with standing stands at the beginning of the 2017/18 season .

Since the work on the sprinkler system in the Stade Achille Hammerel could not be completed in time, RFCU Luxembourg played the first home game at the season opener against FC Progrès Niederkorn at the Stade Camille Polfer .
