BGL Ligue 2018/19

The BGL Ligue 2019/20 was the 106th season of the highest Luxembourg division in men's football. It began on August 4, 2019 and was scheduled to end with the last match day on May 17, 2020. After the 13th matchday on December 1, 2019, play was suspended during a winter break until February 23, 2020. The last games took place on March 8, 2020. Due to decisions by the state government, the season was declared over at the end of April 2020 in view of the global COVID-19 pandemic . No champion was chosen, relegation was suspended.

Interruption and termination of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic

On March 12, 2020, the Luxembourg Football Association interrupted the current season due to the corona virus and suspended the game until further notice. The FLF specified the period of the interruption to the effect that initially no games should take place until April 27, 2020.

The Luxembourg Minister of Labor and Sports Dan Kersch announced on March 23, 2020 that non-profit associations ( associations sans but lucratif ), which also includes sports clubs and associations , could benefit from short-time working . Condition is that the club or association has paid social contributions for the respective person. The measure would thus apply to professionally employed coaches, players or persons bound by service contracts. F91 Dudelange and FC Progrès Niederkorn were the first clubs from the BGL Ligue to apply for short-time work.

At the end of April 2020, the FLF applied to UEFA to end the season prematurely and not award titles due to the global COVID-19 pandemic .

On May 4, 2020, the FLF announced that UEFA had agreed to the premature termination of the BGL Ligue. With this decision, the table of the 17th match day was rated as the final ranking. Fola Esch will therefore qualify for the Champions League in the 2020/21 season . For the first qualifying round of the Europa League 2020/21 were FC Progrès Niederkorn and FC Differdange 03 nominated. Since no cup winners have been determined, the fourth-placed Union Titus Petingen will also take part in the Europa League qualification according to UEFA regulations . The relegation from the BGL Ligue was suspended. Since the teams that occupied the first two places in the honorary doctorate table at the time of the end of the season were granted the right of promotion, the 2020/21 season will be played with sixteen teams.

Attendees

For the 2019/20 season, the clubs that had occupied places 1 to 11 in the previous season were joined by the two direct promoters from the honorary doctorate and the winner of the barrage game between the third of the honorary doctorate and the 12th of the BGL Ligue of the season 2018/19 added. US Hostert prevailed in the barrage game against Swift Hesperingen and thus managed to stay in the league.
