The place name is supposedly derived from Muomina, a niece of Charlemagne .

Camp Ashcan
Ashcan or Camp Ashcan (English for ash bucket ) was the code name of a formerly kept secret Allied prisoner camp under American leadership (officially: Central Continental Prisoner of War Enclosure No. 32 ) at the end of the Second World War , which was set up in the Palace Hotel in Mondorf. Between May and September 1945, almost all of the great Nazi prisoners such as Göring , Ribbentrop and Streicher, as well as high-ranking military officials such as Alfred Jodl, were arrested and interrogated here before they were brought to the war crimes tribunal in Nuremberg .
However, the Americans could not keep what was going on behind the barbed wire completely secret: Mondorf contemporary witnesses said that they snuck around the camp as children during the long holidays to “watch the Görings” .
After the prisoners were brought to Nuremberg in September 1945, Camp Ashcan was disbanded. The building served as a hotel for a few decades before it was demolished in 1988 to make way for the modern thermal bath.
