Career

society

Painting, son of a Surinamese father and a Dutch mother, began playing football at amateur club VV Succes and moved to an intermediate station at HVV Hollandia at the age of nine years in the youth academy of Ajax Amsterdam , where he in the U10 from Dennis Bergkamp was trained . After Malen saw no chance of playing for the professionals at Ajax Amsterdam in the long term, despite offers from clubs in the Premier League and appearances for Dutch youth national teams, he switched after meeting his advisor Mino Raiola and Arsène Wenger , coach of Arsenal FC , as B youth in the Academy of London. In Amsterdam he was still used as a center forward, the former French world and European champion Thierry Henry , at that time coach of the U23 of Arsenal FC, Donyell functioned as a winger; in two years he scored a total of 44 goals for the U18 and U23. He then took part with the professional team in preparation for the 2017/18 season in Asia.

Shortly before the end of the summer transfer period of the 2017/18 season, however, he returned to the Netherlands, joined PSV Eindhoven and received a contract valid until June 2020. Arsenal FC previously wanted to extend its contract, which expired in 2018. He played his first game in professional football in the 2-1 victory of the reserve team in the second Dutch division on September 8, 2017 in the city duel at FC Eindhoven . He scored his first two goals in the 6-0 win against Telstar on November 24, 2017. On April 2, 2018, Donyell Malen managed a hat trick in a 5-1 win against Oss. He was already playing for the Eredivisie professional team on February 2, 2018 , when he came on as a substitute for three-time goalscorer Luuk de Jong in the 82nd minute in the 4-0 win on matchday 21 against PEC Zwolle . Donyell Malen quickly developed into an integral part of the professionals and was used a short time later by trainer Mark van Bommel as a "noble joker". In the cup , the PSV professional team was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Feyenoord Rotterdam , and in the league they became champions.

Donyell Malen scored his first goal for the PSV pros on August 21, 2018 in a 3-2 first-leg win in the UEFA Champions League play-offs against BATE Baryssau . After a 3-0 win in the second leg, PSV qualified for the group stage, in which they met FC Barcelona , Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur and were eliminated from the bottom of the group. The first half of the league ended the Eindhoven team as autumn champions, in the cup, PSV was eliminated in the second round against the second division side and neighbor RKC Waalwijk . Coach Mark van Bommel used Donyell Malen as a winger in all 17 games, but only played once from the start; he scored four goals and as many assists. In the second half of the season PSV continued to lead the table, but fell back to second place after a 3: 3 on matchday 29 against Vitesse Arnheim and became runner-up at the end of the season. Malen was used as a center forward in the last four games of the season and paid back the trust with four scorer points.

In the 5-0 home win against Vitesse Arnheim on matchday 6 of the 2019/20 Eredivisie season , the striker scored all the goals for his team. In December 2019, Malen suffered a knee injury and was out for a long time.

National team

Malen played for the Dutch U15 national team , five times for the U16 team and took part in the 2015 European Championships in Bulgaria with the U17 . There he was used in all three group games; the U17 national team was eliminated after the group stage. A year later, Malen took part in the U17 European Championship in Azerbaijan and reached the final with the team, in which they lost to Portugal. Malen made a total of 20 missions and scored one hit. He then played seven games for the U18 national team and eleven for the U19 (ten goals).

On September 6, 2018, he was used for the first time for the Dutch U21 national team in the goalless draw in Norwich against England .

At the end of August 2019, Malen was nominated by bond coach Ronald Koeman for the first time for the Dutch senior team when he was called up for the European Championship qualifiers against Germany and Estonia . On September 6, 2019, he was substituted on for Marten de Roon in the 58th minute in the 4-2 win at Hamburg 's Volksparkstadion against Germany and scored his first goal with the goal to take the 3-2 lead.
