Carmine "Mino" Raiola (born November 4, 1967 in Nocera Inferiore ) is an Italian player agent active in football .

biography

Raiola was born in Nocera Inferiore in the province of Salerno . In 1968 his parents emigrated with the one-year-old Raiola to Haarlem in the Netherlands and opened a restaurant, in which Raiola later worked. He also briefly studied law and shortly thereafter Raiola entered sports marketing . In addition, the president of HFC Haarlem signed him as sports director in the early 1990s , which was the start of his rapid ascent.

Career as a player agent

Beginnings

Shortly after starting his appearance in Dutch football , Raiola was involved in some transfers of well-known players from Ajax Amsterdam : Bryan Roy moved to US Foggia in 1992 . In 1993 Marciano Vink moved to CFC Genua with Raiola's participation, and Wim Jonk and Dennis Bergkamp's transfers to Inter Milan were also achieved with Raiola's participation . His last major transfer, in which he stayed in the background, is the move from Michel Kreek to Calcio Padova in 1994.

breakthrough

After a while, Raiola decided to come to the fore and become the main personnel in player transfers, which is why he started his own company with Maguire Tax & Legal . The fact that he speaks Italian , English , German , French , Spanish , Portuguese and Dutch in seven languages was particularly helpful . So it came that Raiola transferred the Czech midfielder Pavel Nedvěd after the European Championship in 1996 from Sparta Prague to Lazio Rome . With this business, Raiola established itself in European football. 2001 moved Nedvěd, mediated by Raiola, from Lazio to Juventus Turin .

European top transfers

Since Raiola continued to maintain a good relationship with those responsible at Ajax Amsterdam, he received further offers to advise and mediate players. For example, he signed the Ajax players Mido and Maxwell , which he later brokered for top European clubs. However, the personality of Zlatan Ibrahimović received special attention : he too became one of Raiola's clients and switched from Ajax to Juventus Turin on August 31, 2004 for 16 million euros, whereby Raiola himself pocketed 500,000 euros because he owns Ibrahimović's marketing rights. Since then, Raiola has been organizing large transfers again and again. Ibrahimović changed clubs six times ( Inter Milan , FC Barcelona , AC Milan , Paris Saint-Germain , Manchester United , Los Angeles Galaxy ) and has so far made a transfer sum of over 160 million euros.

Other significant transfers are those from Mario Balotelli to Manchester City and then to AC Milan, Robinho's move to Milan and Henrich Mchitarjan's transfers to Borussia Dortmund in 2013 and to Manchester United in 2016, as well as the then worldwide record transfer from Paul Pogba (rumored transfer amount: 105 million euros) to Manchester United in 2016.

public perception

Raiola is considered to be one of the most successful, but also one of the most controversial advisors in the professional football business and has a reputation for asserting his interests and those of the player represented by all means. According to Marca reports, he is said to have blocked Mathijs de Ligt's move to FC Barcelona in May 2019 because his commission was not high enough. Alex Ferguson described Raiola as a "bastard" in 2017 following the transfer of Paul Pogba. Even Hans-Joachim Watzke , CEO of Borussia Dortmund , expressed in the course of the transfer of Hendrik Mkhitaryan to Manchester United , "Raiola was brutal," but also pointed to its "proper conduct" in connection with the later concluded deal.

At the end of April 2019 it was announced that Raiola had been banned from the Italian association for 3 months. After an appeal, it was lifted prematurely in June 2019.
