action

Marie picks up her husband, the Iranian Ahmad, at the airport in Paris . The two lived separately from one another after Ahmad had left Marie four years earlier and returned to Tehran . The reason for his return is the divorce date set for the following day. Marie now lives with her children Lucie and Léa - both from a previous relationship - with her new boyfriend Samir and his young son Fouad in an old house in need of renovation near Paris.

Marie quarters her husband against his will in her house. She didn't reserve a hotel room for him because he simply hadn't come for an earlier appointment. She seems to want to show her new life to her husband. During Ahmad's presence, a number of conflicts are revealed and gradually Ahmad is drawn into the family problems of the blended family. 16-year-old Lucie rejects her mother's new boyfriend, torpedoes the relationship and withdraws from family life. Fouad also behaves unruly and ventilates his anger with outbursts of anger.

Through his level-headed manner, Ahmad wins the trust of Lucie and Fouad and learns the tragic secret behind Lucie's rebellion against her mother's planned marriage to Samir. He believes that Lucie will only find her way back to her mother when he moves out. He stays - partly with Fouad - again in his old apartment above his business, a dry cleaner.

Step by step, Ahmad succeeds in clearing up the events that have happened in the past and which are still extremely straining relationships by talking to Marie, Lucie, Samir and Fouad in peace. Lucie justifies her dislike of Samir that his wife has been in a coma for eight months after attempting suicide, for which she blames him. Marie is three months pregnant by Samir, which she tells Ahmad before the divorce date. Therefore she will marry Samir.

Little by little, Ahmad finds out that Samir's wife Celine had been drinking cleaning products in front of Naïma, an employee, and in the presence of her son Fouads. Samir believes that Celine wanted to commit suicide because of an argument with a customer about a stain on a dress. After Samir's last two visits to the hospital, the sisters noticed scratches on Celine's stomach, which it was unclear whether they came from herself.

During a conversation between Ahmad and Lucie and Naïma, she said that she had the impression that Céline suspected an affair between her and Samir. Celine also wanted to get rid of them. During the dispute with the customer, Samir had come along, took Naïma's hand and sent his wife Celine home. Celine and Samir had not spoken to each other afterwards. Later, Lucie confesses to Ahmad that she forwarded the emails between her mother and Samir to Celine one day before the suicide. Samir convinces her to tell her mother. She had promised to stay calm, but then got quick and throws Lucie out. Ahmad can calm Marie down and she runs after her daughter.

Marie tells Samir about the emails and that Lucie called Celine the day before the suicide, whereupon he speaks to Naïma, who works illegally. She tells him that Celine was out of business the day before the suicide. When asked by Lucie, Marie learns that the woman on the phone had an accent. Finally Samir confronts Naïma and she confesses that she gave Lucie his wife's email address. The stain on the dress came from Celine because she wanted to get rid of it. Samir blames Naïma for the suicide attempt and throws her out. Before she leaves, Naïma says that Samir's wife did not know about his affair with Marie, otherwise she would have drank the detergent in Marie's pharmacy.

When Marie comes to Samir's cleaning, he no longer wants to talk about the past, it is unimportant and you have to forget it. Finally, Ahmad says goodbye to Marie again and takes this opportunity to explain to her why he suddenly left four years earlier. Stressed out, the pregnant Marie lights a cigarette as usual and tells him she doesn't want to look back.

In the final scene, Samir is with Celine in the hospital, where odor tests did not cause her to react. Finally he goes back again, puts on his perfume and asks Celine to squeeze his hand if she smells something.

In the end, many questions are answered, but a lot remains open.

In its review of the film, Der Spiegel particularly praised the performance of Ali Mosaffa, who played the father figure with almost Solomonic indulgence and warmth, as well as Farhadi's complex figure drawing and exact narrative construction.

The Rheinische Post sees Le passé - the past as a "masterpiece of psychological sensitivity", in which Farhadi draws the viewer into the complex emotional worlds of the film characters and approaches the characters of the protagonists "slowly and carefully" .

The Münchener Abendzeitung describes Farhadi's film in its review as a “rare and artistic experience of truthfulness in the cinema” that touches every viewer as “one of the best psychological portraits of blended family situations”. Farhadi's art is also reflected "in the intelligent structure of history"; it shows the many fallacies of the characters "without any simple assignment of guilt".

The film review on Radio Brandenburg praised Farhadis "precise feeling for melody and rhythm", which elicits "finely balanced, nuanced representations" from his actors.

Farhadi's "great art of showing drama in everyday life" is praised in the film review of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung ; Farhadi knows how to “arouse great emotions with minimalist means” in a grandiose way. The emotions conveyed in the film of "grief, guilt and atonement, jealousy and self-doubt" are universal and are "skillfully dosed"; “Step by step, dialogue by dialogue”, “new and surprising twists and turns” come to light without Farhadi trying “common clichés or well-known narrative patterns”.
