action

Born in Spain, Laura lives in Buenos Aires with her Argentinian husband and daughter . She travels back to her homeland with her two children for her sister's wedding party. During the originally planned short stay at her family's winery near Madrid , Laura also meets Paco, her childhood sweetheart, again. When her daughter disappears from the house overnight, the family panics and Laura notifies her husband Alejandro, who is coming. Paco soon becomes certain that there was no outsider behind the teenage girl's disappearance, and he suspects Alejandro. The secrets that come to light change the life of Laura and her family forever.

History of origin

Open Secret is the first Spanish language film directed by Asghar Farhadi. The Iranian- born filmmaker was inspired for his original screenplay by a trip to southern Spain twelve years earlier, where missing persons reports on the streets made him aware of a kidnapped girl. During the writing process, Farhadi had already thought of the three future leading actors Penélope Cruz , Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darín .

Originally, filming was supposed to start in 2015, instead Farhadi had preferred the Iranian film project The Salesman (2016). An open secret is the third collaboration with film producer Alexandre Mallet-Guy ( Le passé - The Past , The Salesman ) and the Iranian film editor Hayedeh Safiyari ( Nader and Simin - A Separation , The Salesman ). For the actors Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem it was the sixth film together after Jamon Jamon (1992), Live Flesh - Mit Haut und Haar (1997), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), The Counselor (2013) and Loving Pablo (2017) . Bardem said he was nervous during the filming because Farhadi does not work with finished scripts and sees filmmaking as "a collective work". “Directing doesn't mean knowing more than others, I have to listen to others and it's not that I don't know how to do my job. I depend on it. It would be boring to simply execute a text, ”says Farhadi. He worked with Bardem the most during filming. Even before it was released, Bardem described the film as an “extremely precise painting of Spanish morals”.

Filming began in August 2017 on the location in Torrelaguna , near Madrid. According to Farhadi, the language barrier was not a problem: "Everything can be described in two words: violence and tenderness, the other words only explain these two," says the director. The shooting time totaled 14 weeks and ended at the end of November 2017. The production costs are estimated at 10 million euros .

reception

At the end of 2017, Open Secret was named one of the 20 most anticipated films of the 2018 cinema year by critics of the industry journal Variety .

In March 2018, the industry services IndieWire and Variety speculated on a possible participation in the 71st Cannes International Film Festival . In fact, the film was confirmed as the opening film on April 5, 2018, and a first trailer was released. Open Secret was the first Spanish-language contribution since La mala educación - Bad Education by Pedro Almodóvar ( 2004 ), who opened the festival.

After the German theatrical release, the critics were mostly reluctant to negative. This is how Rüdiger Suchsland put it in an article for SWR : “" Open Secret "is a story told very much in the style of a daily soap. A thriller that mutates into melodrama and doesn't get any better over its running time of a good two hours. Everything is told rather carelessly, superficially and without any real interest in locations and characters. [...] the actors in this film are too thick, "play" too much and too recognizable, are never "in the role". So everything here looks very formulaic and made-up. ”Oliver Kaever wrote in the Spiegel :“ This time [...] the melodrama silted up in banal sentimentalism. The title-giving open secret is actually so obvious that it cannot develop any dramatic force. Penélope Cruz acts without make-up, but predictably excited; even with her partner Javier Bardem, the actor's popularity stifles every nuance of the figure. "

Awards

Asghar Farhadi competed with Open Secret for the third time after 2013 and 2016 for the Palme d'Or , the main prize of the festival. The film received no awards.
