Torrelaguna is a small town and a municipality ( municipio ) with a total of 4,760 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the autonomous community of Madrid in central Spain . Since 1974 the historical city center has been recognized as a national cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) in the Conjunto histórico-artístico category .
Location and climate
The small town of Torrelaguna is about 62 km (driving distance) north of the city of Madrid and only 5 km east of the European north-south motorway E 5 (in Spain A-1) at an altitude of approx. 740 m . The climate is harsh in winter, but temperate to warm in summer; Rain (approx. 440 mm / year) falls over the year.

For centuries the community was oriented towards agriculture; Traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds settled in the village.

Celtic or Celtiberian as well as Roman traces have been discovered in the municipality . In the 8th century the region was overrun by the Arab-Moorish armies ( al-Andalus ) . In 1085 the Leonese-Castilian king Alfonso VI conquered . the area back for the Christians ( reconquista ) and annexed it to the Archdiocese of Toledo . In 1390 it received town and market rights from King John I of Castile . In gratitude for not taking part in the Comuneros uprising of 1520-22, she received extensive privileges from Charles I , including legal autonomy ( fuero ) . Charles III gave Torrelaguna full municipal rights (municipio) in the year ; in the Napoleonic Wars (1808-1813) the small town was badly affected. In the years 1851–58 the Isabellas II Canal was passed in the immediate vicinity of the city , which for a long time secured the drinking water supply of Madrid, but was partially destroyed in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).
Attractions
- The initiative for the late Gothic building of the Iglesia de la Magdalena dates back to the early 15th century; the bell tower and parts of the west facade were partly financed by Cardinal Cisneros, who was born in Torrelaguna, but the church was not completed and consecrated until the 17th century. It is a three-aisled church with rib vaults ; The main attraction inside is the approx. 14 m high baroque main altar by Narciso Tomé (around 1730).
- The convent of the Discalced Franciscan Sisters (Franciscanas Descalzas) began in the 16th century. Destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, it was rebuilt in a modified form from 1960.
- The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is a building from the 14th century, which was later changed several times.
- The building of the Alfolí de la Sal or Alhóndiga was a former storage facility for salt, which was also needed for cattle, and other goods.
- The Palacio de Salinas is a Renaissance palace, the facade of which is attributed to the sculptor and architect Gil de Hontañón .
- The building of the former granary (Pósito) and present Town Hall (casa consistorial) with its two-story loggia of Cardinal Cisneros still falls in the time (1514/5).

- The watchtower ( atalaya ) of Arrebatacapas , which dates back to the Moorish times, is about 3 km northwest of the city ( 40 ° 50 ′ 24 ″ N , 3 ° 34 ′ 12 ″ W ).
