Bernhard Wilhelm von Rhede (* 1658 ; † October 24, 1721 ) was Grand Prior of Germany of the Order of St. John and Prince of Heitersheim from 1704 to 1721 .

life and career

Bernhard Wilhelm von Rhede was born in 1658 as the son of Johann Albert Freiherr von Rhede zu Brandlicht and Agnes Sibylla von Asbeck zu Goor. He comes from an old Westphalian noble family. His brother Johann Heinrich (* around 1600) was a canon in Münster . On November 17, 1678 he entered the Order of St. John in Malta . After completing the so-called caravan services (kaper trips), he was a councilor for the German language in Malta from 1681 to 1690. As early as 1684 he received the combined Kommende Leuggern -Klingnau, which he gave up again in 1700. In 1698 he received the coming Herrenstrunden and Burg an der Wupper , which he held until 1721. On August 18, 1696 he was (titular) Bailli of Brandenburg (until June 9, 1702), then he received the office of Großbailli from June 9, 1702 to September 16, 1702. He then became titular prior of Dacien until August 1, 1704, a title which he had to give up again with his appointment as grand prior. As a Grand Prior, he also became Commander of Bubikon . Bernhard Wilhelm von Rhede died in Malta on October 21, 1721.
