Maria de la Cabeza
María de la Cabeza or María Toribia (* around 1060 in Caraquiz or Cobeña near Uceda , † around 1140) was the wife of Isidore of Madrid ; both were canonized in the 17th century . Her feast day is September 9, but she is also commemorated on May 15, her husband's feast day.
Vita / legend
According to tradition, María de la Cabeza came to the small town of Torrelaguna at a young age , where she met the farmer Isidor. Allegedly both married and had a son, Illán, who was later venerated as a saint by the people, despite the lack of recognition by the church . As a child he fell into a well and nothing could be done but prayed; then the water rose briefly to the level of the ground, so that the boy could easily be rescued from it. After that, the couple vowed chastity and lived in separate houses. Another tradition says that María always had a pot of food on the fire, as her husband often brought guests with him. One day, however, he invited so many friends to dinner that the pot was quickly empty and for some there was nothing left. Isidore then instructed her to look again - she could still scratch out enough that there was enough food for everyone.
After the death of her husband, María lived as a hermit ; she had divine inspirations and performed miracles.
Adoration
The bones of María de la Cabeza are missing. She was by Pope Innocent XII. canonized in 1697. Others claim that her remains, along with those of her husband, were moved to the Church of San Isidro in Madrid in 1769 .
presentation
Medieval representations of the saints are unknown. Modern representations start in the 17th century and show her - mostly accompanied by her husband - as a simple country woman.
meaning
Both saints are very popular, especially in rural Europe. According to the Holy Family , they are considered to be an archetype of hard-working Christian coexistence.
