Residents | 778 | 1,187 | 2,788 | 5,644 | 6,948 |
The sustained population increase is mainly due to the relative proximity to the greater Madrid area. In addition, the increasing domestic tourism plays an important role in the creation of jobs and the resettlement of families.
economy
In earlier times, the residents of the place and the entire mountain region lived almost without exception as self-sufficient on the yields of their fields and gardens; cattle breeding was also practiced. With the improvement of the traffic conditions (railway connection, buses) since the middle of the 19th century, the place has become more and more popular as a climatic health resort and summer resort . In the 20th century, a cable car to the ski resort at the Navacerrada Pass was opened.
history
Already in antiquity, a paved Roman road (Calzada Romana) , which probably also included a small bridge, led over the Fuenfría Pass (Puerto de Fuenfría) , which is almost 10 km to the north and almost 1800 m high, towards Segovia . Visigoths and Moors left no traces in the region, which served as a pasture and hunting area in the Middle Ages and early modern times.
Attractions
- The Iglesia de San Sebastián probably dates from the 15th century; the portal is on the south side and is protected by a portico . Inside the church is a reredos (retablo) in the late Baroque style of churrigueresque 18th century.
- Surroundings
- The most important attraction of Cercedilla is the surrounding mountain landscape with its forests, springs, streams and hiking trails.
- Several sections of the stone pavement of the ancient Roman road have been preserved.
