The 1792 m high Fuenfría Pass / Puerto de La Fuenfría crosses the Sierra de Guadarrama . In earlier times it connected the Roman cities of Segobriga ( Segovia ) and Titulcia and thus the fertile plateaus (mesetas) of Old and New Castile ; today the gravel road is closed to normal cars and can only be walked or driven on as a hiking or cycling path; there are often snow barriers in winter.
location
The actual top of the pass is about 500 m east of the political border between the two provinces of Madrid and Segovia . South of the pass lies the headwaters of the Río Guadarrama, which consists of several streams .
history
Iberians and Celts very likely already used the pass route; the Romans built a paved road over the pass, parts of which are still preserved in the lower elevations. With the improvement of the infrastructure since the middle of the 19th century, the pass became less and less important; today it is only used as a hiking trail.
