Capisterre is a region on the island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean . The name comes from the French Capesterre ("Upper Land" in contrast to " Basseterre " = Lower Land). The area covers the northern coastal plain of the island. It was originally colonized by the French in the early 17th century. The main town was the only port, the fishing town of Dieppe Bay Town . The area was lost to the British in 1713 . In the early 20th century, many French immigrants arrived from the neighboring island of Saint Barths after Capisterre and were famous for their illegal Black distilleries (moonshine trade).

Today the region celebrates La Festival de Capisterre , held every September during the independence celebrations of St Kitts and Nevis (September 19th).
