Several rivers run through the plateau and have gently eroded lowlands. San Fernando de Henares is located on the west bank of the Jarama . The Henares flows into the Jarama southeast of the city center . In the north of the city is the Madrid-Barajas International Airport .

In the east there is agricultural land beyond the bypass. In the southwest, Paseo de Oria separates the settlement area from the open field.

Neighboring communities

City structure

The city is divided into two cores: the city west of the Jarama and the Parque Empresarial de San Fernando business park east of the Jarama and the M-50 ring road at the gates of the neighboring municipality of Torrejón de Ardoz.

The city can still be divided into two parts: the historical core around the two squares Plaza España and Plaza de Fernando IV with its streets running concentrically around the core and the linear residential area south of Avenida de San Sebastián .

climate

The interior of Spain is characterized by an oceanic-continental climate with cold winters with precipitation, occasionally as snow and with very hot and dry summers.

The nearby Jarama River has a mitigating effect on the microclimate.

population

development

Between 1987 and 2006 the population increased by 62.9% from 24,586 to 40,048 inhabitants. Since 1997, the inhabitants have been shown separately according to their origin.

The proportion of foreigners from initially 0.7% rose to 13.1%. The city is becoming more diverse and cosmopolitan. Of the 5,260 (100%) foreigners registered in 2006, Europeans were the largest group with 4,027 people (76.5%). However, only 207 (3.9%) come from the EU, 3.820 (72.6%) are Europeans from non-EU countries. 753 inhabitants (14.3%) come from South America , 243 (4.6%) from Africa (including North Africa ) and 109 (2.1%) from Asia . The rest is shared among the rest.

After the fall of communism, many Eastern Europeans (Europeans from non-EU countries) immigrated to Spain and took on simple, physical work there, e.g. B. in construction. But the gas deliveries, which in Spain often still come to households in bottles and not via gas networks, are often delivered by Eastern Europeans. In these areas they are slowly displacing the group of North Africans, some of whom are now more integrated and are catching up with
higher strata .

languages

The majority of the population speaks Spanish as their mother tongue. The immigrants (2006: 13.1%) bring a large number of other languages to San Fernando. In particular, the group of non-EU Europeans traditionally has a rather limited knowledge of Spanish, while immigrants from South America are often Spanish as their mother tongue.

Religions

The majority of the San Fernandians are Roman Catholic . San Fernando belongs to the Diocese of Alcalá de Henares and is divided into the three parishes Nuestra Señora del Templo , Purificación de Nuestra Sra. and los Santos Juan y Pablo .

Immigrants brought Islam (from North Africa), the Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox faith (Eastern Europe) and other religions to the city. None of these communities have houses of prayer in urban areas. The nearby city of Madrid offers meeting places for all religious communities.

Catholic immigrants find the infrastructure of their church.

Today, however, religion only plays a subordinate role for many people.

history

Introductory article: History of Spain

In 1746 King Philippe V bought land to establish a royal cloth factory in the area of San Fernando de Henares. Shortly afterwards he passed away and the project was continued during the tenure of Ferdinand VI. brought to an end by Spain ( sp.:Fernando VI. ) who appointed Ventura de Argumosa as governor of the Real Sitio (royal estate) . Today is 1748 as the founding date of San Fernando de Henares.

Apartments were built around the factory for the cloth factory workers, who form the core of today's community. Opposite the factory, a square was created (today: Plaza España), which was connected with an axis with a second round square (today: Plaza de Fernando VI.). This area together with the original houses are now a listed building.

During the 250 years of its history, San Fernando has seen several ups and downs. The cloth factory underwent several renovations and became a hospice. The main facade is preserved to this day and houses the city administration.

The Real Sitio was sold at a public auction in the mid-19th century.

politics

Stronghold of the Izquierda Unida

Alongside Rivas-Vaciamadrid , San Fernando is the only important city in Madrid that is governed by the party alliance of the United Left (sp .: Izquierda Unida) . At the national level, the IU is a smaller party by 5 percent. The IU lost its absolute majority in the city council in 2007. It remained the most elected party.

In elections to higher-level citizens' representatives (Assembly of Madrid, Spanish Congress or European Parliament), the sovereign leans more towards the two big parties. Nevertheless, the performance of the IU is above the regional or national average.

Izquierda Unida share of the vote San Fernando Madrid Spain
Local elections 2003 51.6% (1) 8.8% (3)
2004 European elections 9.48% (3) 5.13% (3) 4.15% (4)

Municipal council

In the first municipal council elections after democratization, the Communist Party of Spain achieved an overwhelming majority in 1979 . The first mayor was Angel Fernández Lupión, who after a few months in office handed it over to Enrique Guerra López.

In the municipal council elections of April 2007, the withdrawal of the Alkaldin (mayoress) of San Fernando Montserrat Muñoz from local politics left a loophole in the Izquierda Unida (IU). This lost an absolute majority, achieved its worst result since 1991 and is on par with the conservative People's Party ( PP ). A coalition between socialists (IU) and social democrats ( PSOE ) made Julio Setién (IU) - previously Alcalde Teniente ( Vice Mayor ) - the Alcalde.

In his message to the citizens of San Fernando, Setién states the objectives for the legislature:

"Ahora tenemos por delante cuatro años apasionantes, en los que vamos a culminar la construcción y rehabilitación del centro histórico, a poner en pie cientos de viviendas baratas, a dotarnos de una red de aparcamientos, a crear nuevos parcamientos nuevortes parques y culturales, sanitarias y deportivas. Mejoraremos los barrios más antiguos y ofreceremos más actividades a los jóvenes, contribuiremos a la creación de miles de puestos de trabajo y tendremos una ciudad más limpia. "

“Now we have four exciting years ahead of us, in which we will push the construction and renovation of the historic center to a peak, tackle hundreds of inexpensive apartments, give us a network of parking spaces, create new parks, new sports -, will construct cultural and health facilities. We will improve the oldest neighborhoods and we will provide more leisure activities for the youth, we will devote ourselves to creating thousands of jobs and we will have a cleaner city. "

- Julio Setién Martínez, Alcalde-Presidente, 2007

So Setién takes on the classic political fields for the socialists / communists.

Montserrat Muñoz, who was Alcaldesa (Mayor) from 1999 to 2007, moved to the Congreso de los Diputados (Congress of Deputies) as a successor for Angel Pérez in July 2007 and has one of the five Spanish or one of the two Madrid seats of the Izquierda Unida holds the 8th legislature . The minority government of the PSOE is supported by the IU alongside the parties ERC , CiU and PNV . In the Spanish parliamentary elections in 2008 , the IU lost its second seat in the constituency of Madrid , so that Montserrat Muñoz is no longer a member of the Congreso .

Distribution of seats in the municipal council from 1987 to the present day

In the local elections of 2007, the Partido Popular achieved its best result in the observation period since 1987. In return, the result of the Socialists (IU) was the worst since 1991 and they lost the absolute majority they had held since 1999. Only the smallest party in the city council, the PSOE, could still help it through a coalition on the government bench.
