Location and climate
The place Tielmes is on the lower reaches of the Río Tajuña in the southeast of the Autonomous Community of Madrid at an altitude of about 590 m . The distance to the northern city of Alcalá de Henares is about 32 km (driving distance), the distance to the north-western capital Madrid is almost 50 km. The climate is temperate to warm; the rather low rainfall (approx. 450 mm / year) mainly falls in the winter half-year.

Residents | 833 | 1,357 | 1,694 | 1,922 | 2,650 |
Due to the relative proximity to the greater Madrid area, there has been a significant population growth since the 1990s, which is mainly due to immigrants from the rural areas of the surrounding area.
economy
For centuries the community lived exclusively from growing grain ( barley and wheat ), which was mainly operated for self-sufficiency ; the cultivation of olives and wine also played a major role. Livestock husbandry (sheep, goats, chickens) also took place to a small extent. For centuries, the town of Tielmes served as a mercantile, craft and cultural center for the hamlets and farmsteads in its area, which have now mostly disappeared. Today agriculture still plays the most important role in the economic life of the municipality, but there are also smaller craft and industrial companies.
history
Due to the proximity to the Río Tajuña, most of the peoples of Spanish history ( Celts , Romans , Visigoths as well as Arabs and Berbers ) should have left their traces in Tielmes, but excavation approaches in this regard have so far not been able to reveal anything significant. In the Middle Ages and afterwards the place belonged to the district (alfoz) of Alcalá de Henares .
Attractions
- The parish church (Iglesia de Santos Justo y Pastor) is dedicated to the two early Christian martyrs Justus and Pastor , who were allegedly born in Tielmes and tortured and beheaded in front of the city walls of Alcalá de Henares around the year 304. While the west facade is made entirely of brick , the south side of the church building, begun in 1637 and completed in 1787, consists of the combination of bricks and rubble , which was already known in Roman times ; in Spain this combination is called the Mudejar style . Two portals - one on the west and one on the south side - lead into the single-nave interior of the church, which has a transept and is completely plastered.
- The Museo Casa-Cueva was set up in a cave carved into the rock .
- A single-arched stone bridge (Puente viejo) from the early 17th century, slightly raised in the middle, crosses the Río Tajuña.
- The public wash house (lavadero) was built in 1927.
