Location of the municipality

Moralzarzal is a municipality in the Sierra de Guadarrama . It is located in the autonomous community of Madrid in Spain , around 43 km north of the city of Madrid. The name comes from the 14th century, when the two neighboring villages Fuente del Moral and Zarzal were united into one municipality.

The patron saint is the Archangel Michael .

history

The area was depopulated during the Reconquista . The settlement was founded in 1147. It was probably farmers from the area around Segovia who founded the village. As a result, the settlement was caught in the tension between Madrid and Segovia. King Alfonso X divided into the second half of the XIII. Century a number of disputed municipalities of the crown and named the area El Real de Manzanares .

Population development

The population explosion at the end of the 20th century is remarkable. While it was a settlement with fewer than a thousand inhabitants for centuries, the number of inhabitants rose continuously from the 1970s and massively at the turn of the millennium. The influx comes from rural areas on the one hand, but also from the greater Madrid area due to the significantly lower land prices and rents.
