The forest railway in Pinhal de Leiria , forest railway in Pinhal do Rei or colloquially Comboio de Lata was from 1923 to 1965 operated narrow gauge - Forest Railway in Marinha Grande in Portugal .

history

The King Alfonso III. Pine forest planted in the 13th century lies on an area of 11,080 hectares in the municipality of Marinha Grande . It is one of the first intensive monoculture plantings of maritime pines .

The forest scientist António Mendes de Almeida (1867-1937) built a forest railway in 1923 in Pinhal de Leiria (pt) in Portugal . The forest railway came to Portugal in the post-war period of World War I as part of the German reparations payments . The construction of the railway took place under the direction of the forester António Eduardo F. Gameiro. The train was colloquially known as the "Comboio de Lata" ( tin toy train ) after Dr. Manuel Francisco Alves jokingly exclaimed in front of a group of friends one day: "Um Comboio de Lata!"

The railway was shut down in 1965 after the new forest road network was completed. In 1967 the locomotives, the wagons and the rails were publicly auctioned by the tax office. The MMN3 locomotives and a passenger car were purchased by the local council. In 1974 it was erected as a memorial in São Pedro de Moel (en) on the Arala Pinto children's playground. Without proper protection, however, it deteriorated within a few years and was hardly worth more than junk. On the initiative of the Marinha Grande parish council, the locomotive was exhibited at the 1996 Marinha Grande craft and gastronomy fair. In 1997 the same council financed a cosmetic restoration of the old locomotive, which was then stored in the courtyard of the town hall. It is now in a pavilion in the Marinha Grande city park, where it was exhibited in 2011 as part of the craft and gastronomy fair. One of the locomotives (O&K works number 9998/1922, MNN1, Elouise ) is now on the Old Kiln Light Railway (en) in England . In the meantime, the local council has also acquired the MMN3 locomotive, which has since been exhibited on a pedestal as an exterior decoration by an event company in Vila Franca de Xira .

In October 2017, the forest burned almost completely due to the arson-induced forest fires that devastated the area and killed 50 people. Since then there have been initiatives to reforest the pine forest.

The railway was operated with three wood-fired O&K steam locomotives, two passenger wagons, several open freight wagons and a few long wood wagons to transport pine trunks. On public holidays, especially on Ascension Day , the train was available to the population for walks in the woods or trips to the beach. The vacationers of S. Pedro de Moel had the privilege to explore the Pinhal de Leiria with her once or twice a year.

Route

The rail network was about 30 km long and had a few branches to the sawmills. There were 3 main routes:

  • Pedreanes - train station
  • Pedreanes - Lot 225 ( Talhão 225, near the new bridge)
  • Pedreanes - São Pedro de Moel ( Penedo da Saudade lighthouse )

Planned reconstruction

In the 21st century, interest in a partial restoration of the Caminho de Ferro do Pinhal de Leiria has reappeared, especially in the municipality of Marinha Grande. In October 2011 the municipality of Marinha Grande near São Pedro de Moel signposted the approximately 6.4 km long PR1 Trilho da Antiga Linha do Comboio de Lata hiking trail . On April 2, 2015, the Marinha Grande newspaper reported that the Associação Amigos do Comboio de Lata had started a petition to request the reconstruction of the forest railway because of its importance to the history of Marinha Grande. In the summer of 2018, the municipality announced several structural investments for the remainder of the year, with the restoration of the old railroad being one of the priorities. On January 9, 2019, the Região de Leiria newspaper reported that in December 2018 the Marinha Grande municipality had hired a company to investigate the establishment of a tourist route between São Pedro de Moel and Marinha Grande.

literature

In May 2019, the Resource Center for Digital Integration of the University of Education and Social Sciences of the Leiria Polytechnic published the children's book Comboio de Lata about the railway of the Leiria pine forest. Following the concept of a "book for everyone", it contains text, braille and relief images for blind or visually impaired children, pictograms for children with intellectual disabilities or other restrictions, and QR codes (Quick Response) that refer to a website on the audiobook versions for blind children and the Portuguese Sign Language video book for deaf children.
