Villar del Olmo is a small town and a municipality with 2,011 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the east of the autonomous community of Madrid . The municipality belongs to the cultural landscape of the Alcarria .
Location and climate
The place Villar del Olmo is on the brook (arroyo) Vega a good 49 km southwest of the Spanish capital Madrid ; to the north borders the municipality of Nuevo Baztán . The climate in winter is temperate, while in summer it is warm to hot; the rather low amounts of precipitation (approx. 450 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

Because of its relative proximity to the greater Madrid area, the population of the municipality has grown significantly since the 1990s.

The community is still largely agricultural. Day tourism also plays an economic role.
history
Little is known about the early history of the area; Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Islamic-Moorish traces are missing. The place was probably only after the recapture ( reconquista ) of Toledo (1085) and Alcalá (1118) in connection with the policy of repopulation ( repoblación ) founded. In 1561 the place received city rights (villazgo) .
Worth seeing
- The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua is a single-nave - originally perhaps built in the 13th century - in the 16th / 17th century. However, newly century church with a transept (transept) and an unexposed cupola . Inside there is a late baroque altarpiece (retablo) .
