The Sausee - locally also called Säusee - is an elongated lake with a maximum size of 3,500 square meters in Frankfurt am Main , which is located in the district but south of the development of the Seckbach district . The lake and about twenty meters of its surroundings have been designated as a natural monument since 1937 . The area is located in the nature reserve green belt and green corridors in the city of Frankfurt am Main ( Frankfurt Green Belt ).

characterization

The Sausee is the relic of an old arm of the Main and part of the Frankfurt green belt. In earlier times there was probably a sand pit in its place. The area is referred to as a sand field on a district plan from 1771, the original of which is available to the Seckbach Local History Museum . The name Sausee or Säusee comes from the fact that the Seckbach farmers drove their pigs to the lake in earlier centuries in order to water them there. The shallow lake is a sky pond . The peculiarity of this natural phenomenon is that the body of water fills up with groundwater and rainwater in the winter half-year, which can completely seep away and evaporate in the summer half-year. A bench on the bank of the lake allows you to linger longer. The former oxbow lake area of the Main between Riedteich, Seckbacher Ried and Erlenbruch can be explored on paved bike paths .

A drawing by the Seckbach painter and graphic artist Erich Dittmann from 1969 clearly shows that the Seckbachers did not always accept the Sausee as a natural monument - at times it was abused as an illegal bulky waste dump.

Flora and fauna

Specialists have adjusted to the conditions at the lake: in addition to amphibians , water beetles and water birds and the very rare spotted darter ( Sympetrum flaveolum ), the poisonous water fennel ( Oenanthe aquatica ) and the shield water cockfoot ( Ranunculus peltatus ) colonize its environment.

The miniature biotope, partially surrounded by old trees such as hornbeams ( Carpinus betulus ), poplars (Populus), beeches ( Fagus sylvatica ) and willows (Salix), shrubs, reeds ( Phragmites australis ; synonym: Phragmites communis Trin. ) And reed beds is located at the intersection of the streets Im Trieb, Am Enkheimer Steg, Am Sausee, Gelastraße and Am Büttelstück . The Seckbacher Ried nature reserve and leisure gardens are in the immediate vicinity .

The Seckbach nature conservation group in the BUND regularly organizes guided tours on the subject of amphibians at the Sausee (for example pool fun in Seckbach's wet area , especially for children).
