Villanueva de la Cañada is a municipality in Spain in the Community of Madrid . In 2019 it had 21,445 inhabitants. It is located about 30 km west of Madrid . East of the city, the Aulencia River flows into the Guadarrama , which later flows into the Tagus .

- The European Space Astronomy Center is located in Villanueva .
- It is also the seat of the private university Alfonso X el Sabio, founded in 1993 .
