Pisco Elqui (formerly La Greda and La Unión ) is a Chilean village in the Elqui Valley , located in the Paihuano commune in the Coquimbo region . The distance from La Serena is approximately 107 km in an easterly direction.

history

Because of its extremely clayey soil, the village was previously known as La Greda . This clay was used by both the Indians and Spaniards in the 16th century for pottery and for making treasures.

The name La Greda was used by today's village of Pisco Elqui until 1873. At that time the name was changed to La Unión , with which the residents expressed their solidarity and sympathy for the victims after a bad smallpox epidemic.

On March 20, 1873, the name for the place was officially changed to La Unión by enactment.

At the initiative of the MPs Gabriel González Videla , Humberto Alvares Suarez and Pedro E. Alonso , the place name of La Unión was changed to Pisco Elqui on February 1, 1936 with the help of Law 5798. The aim was that the spirit “born” in Chile could be sold all over the world without any legal difficulties.

Gabriela Mistral , Chilean poet and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Vicuña and brought to Montegrande by her parents when she was 10 days old, so that she spent her childhood there and in Pisco Elqui, which was then called La Unión. She spoke out against the name change from La Unión to Pisco Elqui, as it was an incomprehensible decision for her and she hoped that the name change will be reversed at some point, as the name La Unión also expresses the unity of the Derecho and Cochiguaz rivers .

tourism

The village is one of the main tourist destinations in the Elqui Valley and numerous tourist agencies in the village offer excursions throughout the Elqui Valley. The climate in the Elqui Valley is particularly appealing, offering around 360 days of sunshine per year. It also impresses with its proximity to the Andes Cordillera as well as the rural and old villages. Furthermore, the uniquely clear sky offers the best conditions to visit one of the numerous observatories in the region, which are internationally known.

Culture

The name alone brings the place in connection with the Chilean national drink pisco , a drink whose origins go back to the Peruvian region of Pisco in Ica . The Elqui Valley's oldest pisco distillery, Los Nichos, is located in the vicinity of the village .
