The municipality of Paihuano is located on the upper reaches of the Elqui River in the Región de Coquimbo in Chile . The municipality includes the towns of Alcohuaz, Pisco Elqui , Paihuano, Cochiguaz, Montegrande, Rivadavia, Tres Cruces and Horcón.
The area has been inhabited since the Molle culture. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, it was inhabited by the Diaguita . Colonial rule over what is now the commune of Paihuano has been documented since the 1606th century, when 600 parcels of land in what is now Rivadavia were allocated by order of the governor. In 1893, today's Paihuano Commune was created.
The main industries are tourism - especially in Pisco Elqui - and agriculture. Grapes for wine and pisco , as well as other fruits are grown.
