ESAC

The European Space Astronomy Center ( European Space Astronomy Center , ESAC ) is a branch of the European Space Agency in Villafranca del Castillo , 30 km west of Madrid in Spain.

It archives and evaluates data from the ESA's scientific space missions and makes them available for research. Its 15 m antenna is also part of ESTRACK, as is the 35 m antenna in Cebreros, 65 km away .

ESAC is home to the Science Operations Centers for a number of ESA's scientific missions.

The many supported missions include Giotto , ISO , XMM-Newton , Integral , Herschel , Planck , SOHO , Mars Express , SMART-1 , Rosetta , Huygens , Venus Express and Gaia.

The Spanish Laboratory for Space Astrophysics and Fundamental Physics (LAEFF), a research facility designed to support the training of scientists to become astrophysicists, has also been located on the site since it was founded in 1991. LAEFF is a collaboration between INTA, CSIC and ESA.
