Cebreros is a place and a central Spanish municipality ( municipio ) consisting of several villages, hamlets (pedanías) and individual farmsteads with a total of 3,120 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Ávila in the autonomous region of Castile-León .

location

The place Cebreros is located at the eastern end of the Sierra de Gredos a good 45 km southeast of Ávila or a good 90 km west of Madrid at an altitude of approx. 765 m above sea level. d. The climate in winter is cool, but in summer it is quite warm; the small amounts of precipitation (approx. 385 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

The population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.

economy

The economic life of Cebreros is largely agrarian - in the past, grain, vines, etc. were planted for self-sufficiency ; Vegetables came from the house gardens. Cattle breeding (in the past mainly sheep and goats, today mostly cattle) and forestry (especially the extraction of charcoal ) were also operated. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the village. In the 19th century several paper mills were built on the streams in the area . Since the last decades of the 20th century, viticulture (the place and its surroundings have their own Denominación de Origen ) and rural tourism (turismo rural) have played an increasingly important role in the economic life of the municipality. ESA has been operating the Deep Space Antenna2 at Cebreros since 2002 .

history

Since around 700 BC The region was settled by the Celtic Vettons . There are no Roman and Visigoth evidence. In the 8th century the Moors overran the region; However, nothing is known of local foundations. In the 11th century the area was recaptured ( reconquista ) and repopulated ( repoblación ) by the Christians .

Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol
  • The place has three squares and several old houses.
  • The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol , built in the strict Herrera style in the 16th century, is the most architecturally significant building in the town. The groin vaults of the three naves are the same height (" Hallenkirche ") and rest on brick pillars . The yoke in front of the central apse is domed; on the pillars in front of it there are two pulpits with different canopies . Three uniformly designed altarpieces from the construction period form an impressive and harmonious conclusion.
  • The ruin of the 14./15. Iglesia Vieja , which was built in the 17th century, impresses with its preserved keel arch portal with four archivolt arches .
  • The Museo Adolfo Suárez y la Transición was integrated into the church ruins at the end of the 20th century and deals with the living conditions of the rural population in earlier times.
  • A court column ( picota or rollo ) stands on a rock on the outskirts. It dates from the 16th century and is a reminder of the municipality's independent jurisdiction.
Surroundings
  • The history of the Ermita de Valsordo , located approx. 2 km south of the village, dates back to the Middle Ages, but the current building dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. Century.
  • There are two small medieval bridges in the municipality.

The Carnival of Cebreros has gained national importance.

Personalities

The writer and Nobel Prize winner Camilo José Cela (1916–2002) lived in Cebreros from 1947 to 1950.
