Bohoyo is a place and a central Spanish municipality ( municipio ) with 237 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the southwest of the province of Ávila in the autonomous region of Castile-León . The hamlets (pedanías) Navamediana , Navamojada and Los Guijuelos also belong to the municipality .

location

The place Bohoyo is located in the wooded Sierra de Gredos Natural Park a good 90 km (driving distance) southwest of Ávila or about 100 km south of Salamanca at an altitude of about 1150 m above sea level. d. The climate in winter is cool, but in summer it is quite warm despite the altitude; the low amounts of precipitation (approx. 535 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

The sharp population decline since the 1950s is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.

economy

The economic life of Bohoyo is largely oriented towards agriculture and forestry - in the past, grain, vines, etc. were planted for self-sufficiency ; Vegetables came from the house gardens. Cattle breeding (previously mainly sheep and goats, today mostly cattle) was also operated. Rural tourism (turismo rural) is now playing an increasingly important role in the economic life of the municipality.

history

Nothing is known about the earlier history of Bohoyo; also Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Arab-Moorish missing certificates. The place is first mentioned as a hunting area around 1340; Bohoyo later belonged to the manorial (señorío) of Valdecorneja whose ancestral castle (castillo) in El Barco de Ávila is received. Later the lordship fell to the Dukes of Alba , who granted the place town charter (villazgo) in 1488 .

Bohoyo

• The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora dates from the 16th century; the open south porch ( portico ) seems to have been added a few decades later. The approximately 12 m wide nave is a Artesonado -Holzbalkendecke with tie rods spans, the presbytery contrast from one to squinches dormant dome . The semicircle of the apse is filled with a late Baroque altarpiece (retablo) in the style of Churriguerism .
• The Ermita del Santo Ángel de la Guarda is on the outskirts. The largely unadorned facade in the late Renaissance style is elevated by a simple bell gable (espadaña) .

Los Guijelos

• The Ermita de los Santos Mártires , which has been restored repeatedly, is believed to be the oldest church in the municipality.
