San Miguel de Corneja is a northern Spanish municipality ( municipio ) in the province of Ávila in the Autonomous Community of Castile and Leon .

location

San Miguel de Corneja is located in a fertile valley basin above the Río Corneja in the Sierra de Gredos, almost 57 kilometers (driving distance) southwest of the provincial capital Ávila ; the city of Salamanca is just under 80 kilometers to the northwest. The neighboring town of Piedrahíta, which is well worth seeing, is only about five kilometers to the west.

In the 19th and first half of the 20th century, the population was consistently over 300 people.

economy

Agriculture, especially cattle breeding, traditionally plays the largest role in the economic life of the small mountain community. Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) has increased over the last few decades.

Attractions

• The Church of San Martín is a long, single-nave building made of rubble masonry. It has a bell gable and a south porch ( portico ), as can also be found in some churches in the province of Avila.
• A stone cross near the church shows an already badly weathered crucifix , which probably belonged to a way of the cross.
• A sundial from the 16./17. Century.
• At the beginning of the new millennium, a small museum ( museo etnográfico ) was set up in which household and agricultural equipment from the past centuries is presented. In addition, the various traditional crafts ( shoemaker , blacksmith , carpenter, etc.) are represented with the tools characteristic of their profession.
