The Sierra de Gredos is the central and with the Pico Almanzor (2592 m) also the highest section of the Castilian Divisional Mountains .

geography

location

The mountain range is located on the Iberian Peninsula in the territory of the provinces Ávila , Cáceres , Toledo and the autonomous community of Madrid . The highest point is the 2592 m high Pico Almanzor. The Sierra de Gredos is the headwaters of the Tormes , Alberche and Tiétar rivers ; it forms the watershed between the water systems of the Duero in the north and the Tagus in the south.

climate

The Sierra de Gredos is classified as a high mountain range in Spain . It is therefore imperative to take the appropriate precautions before planning a trip, be it summer or winter. The mean temperature fluctuates in winter above 2000 m between 0 ° and −5 ° Celsius. A closed snow cover is to be expected from December to April if you intend to go on an excursion to the mountain lakes of the Laguna Grande or the Cinco Lagunas .

places

Important localities are El Barco de Ávila , Navacepeda de Tormes and Hoyos del Espino on the climatically rougher north side, which is characterized by livestock farming, and Madrigal de la Vera and Candeleda on the south side, which is characterized by fertile soils. Most of the villages in the region benefit from tourism as ski resorts or as summer retreats.

fauna

The mountains are home to some rare animal and plant species such as the Gredos ibex , the bluethroat , the white stork and the Spanish imperial eagle .
