economy

The economic life of El Tiemblo is largely agrarian - in the past, grain, vines, etc. were planted for self-sufficiency ; Vegetables came from the house gardens. Cattle breeding (in the past mainly sheep and goats, today mostly cattle) and forestry (especially the extraction of charcoal ) were also operated. There is a large chestnut forest (castañar) in the municipality . Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the village. Since the last decades of the 20th century, rural tourism (turismo rural) has played an increasingly important role in the economic life of the municipality.

history

Since around 700 BC The region was settled by the Celtic Vettons . The Toros de Guisando (approx. 5th to 3rd century BC), which are located about 7 km outside the municipality in the direction of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, are impressive evidence of this period . A settlement of the region by the Visigoths has been proven. More than 20 graves were found in the site known as Valdepalomas (approx. 12 km outside the village).

The first contacts with the Moors began in the 8th century ; Names of places and fields such as Alberche and Atalaya still bear witness to the influences from this period. In the 11th century the area was recaptured ( reconquista ) and repopulated ( repoblación ) by the Christians . In the second half of the 14th century, monks from the Order of the Hieronymites settled here .

Since July 2, 1445, the village has been recognized as a municipality ( villa ). Of particular importance for Spanish history is the regulation of the succession to the throne in favor of the later Isabella I of Castile . This ceremony took place on September 18, 1468 at the Toros de Guisando , about 8 km southeast of the town in the direction of Madrid. A memorial plaque there still commemorates this important event in Spanish history.
