Muñana is a place and a central Spanish municipality ( municipio ) with 375 inhabitants (as of January 1 2019) in the center of the province of Ávila in the Autonomous Community of Castile and Leon .
location
The place Muñana is located in the extreme west of the Valle de Amblés on the north side of the Iberian Divide Mountains at an altitude of about 1170 m above sea level. d. M. The city of Avila is a good 34 km (driving distance) to the northeast. The Río Adaja , a tributary of the Duero , flows past the village about 3 km south. The climate in winter is cool, in summer it is quite warm despite the altitude; the low amounts of precipitation (approx. 450 mm / year) fall - with the exception of the almost rainless summer months - distributed over the whole year.

The significant population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.

Agriculture (especially livestock) has traditionally played the largest role in the community's formerly self-sufficient economy. The place is considered the center of meat production in the Valle de Amblés. There are several wind turbines on a nearby ridge . Income from tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes ( casas rurales ) was added in the last decades of the 20th century.
history
In the first millennium BC The municipality belonged to the settlement area of the Celtic Vettons . Roman , Visigoth and even Arabic-Moorish traces are missing. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the Valle de Amblés was probably recaptured by the Christians more or less without a fight ( reconquista ) and then repopulated ( repoblación ) .
Attractions
- The parish church of San Esteban Protomártir is dedicated to the arch martyr Stephen and dates from the 15th / 16th centuries. Century; A bell gable (espadaña) is located above the unadorned west facade . The three-aisled interior is spanned by an artesonado wooden beam ceiling with tie rods typical of the area ; the somewhat higher and polygonally broken apse , on the other hand, shows a star vault in the late Gothic style and a baroque altarpiece (retablo) . Two more gilded carved altars are on the back walls of the aisles.
- On the outskirts there is a claw stand (potro de herrar) made of granite stones , which refers to the once important role of cattle breeding. Besides the one in the hamlet of Blacha in the municipality of La Torre , it is the only one of its kind (preserved) in the Valle de Amblés.
- Surroundings
- The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Zarza, which is surmounted by a simple bell gable and provided with a small porch ( portico ) , stands by the town's cemetery (cemeterio) .
- A stone figure of a bull (?) ( Verraco ) found in Muñana was brought to Ávila in the 19th century.
