Alcorcón is a city in the greater Madrid area ( Spain ), about 13 km southwest of the capital. It covers an area of 33.7 km² and has 170,514 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).

In early historical times the area was inhabited by the Celtiberian Carpetans before it became Roman and then Visigothic. There are various theories about the origin of the city's name. A derivation through the Arabic Al-Qadr is considered possible, but naming it after a cork oak forest (span. Cornocal ) is also possible. The place was first mentioned on July 28, 1208. The place remained insignificant for a long time until a group of monks from the area of La Rioja arrived in the 16th century with the bones of St. Domingo de la Calzada (11th century) and founded a monastery they named Santo Domingo de la Ribota . The current church in the town, Santa María la Blanca, was started towards the end of the 16th century and completed in the 18th century.

The Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos is located in Alcorcón . The town is also home to a number of artists, including comedians Mariano Mariano, Peter Corzo and J. Navaluengas.

The place is mentioned in the text of Baila el Chiki Chiki by Rodolfo Chikilicuatre , the Spanish contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 .

In 2013 construction work on a property called Eurovegas with casinos from the US company Las Vegas Sands is to begin. The project is expected to cost 17 billion euros and will open in 2017. Ultimately, the investor could not come to an agreement with the government and the project was buried in late 2013.
