Domingo García , later Santo Domingo de la Calzada (* 1019 in Viloria de Rioja , Spain; † May 12, 1109 Santo Domingo de la Calzada , Spain) was a patron of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Rioja , Spain .

Life

Domingo was possibly born in Viloria de Rioja, about 17 km west of the then non-existent place Santo Domingo de la Calzada; both places were on the Camino de Santiago. He studied in the monastery of San Millán de Suso , but was not accepted as a monk. He then settled near the later Santo Domingo de la Calzada and led a hermit life . The area was an unsafe borderland and only partially cultivated; as roads there were dilapidated Roman roads or new roads that were poorly prepared and uneven, and robbers lurked in the woods. As he met more and more stray pilgrims , he dedicated his life to them and renewed streets (calzadas) . In 1044 he built a bridge over the Río Oja ; his hospital / hostel building (renovated in the late Gothic style) is now a Parador . He is also said to have built the cathedral's predecessor . After the death of King Sancho IV of Navarre , King Alfonso VI took over . from Castile in 1076 the Rioja. From then on, Alfonso of Castile actively supported Domingo's project.

Domingo died in 1109. The market town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada was built and developed around his grave ; Miracle reports contributed to the development of the place. In the 14./15. In the 19th century the legend of the rooster and the hen originated, which does not directly refer to Domingo, but whose stable can be seen in the city's cathedral. His elaborately designed tomb was created in the first half of the 16th century and was designed by Felipe Bigarny .

Adoration

Dominic is mainly venerated along the Way of St. James and especially in the Burgos area; however, not a single church bears its patronage .

Medieval representations of the saint are unknown. Most of the depictions were made from the 18th century and show him as a hermit with a long coat.
